Nino: More: 02/2011

Episode 26 A Face That's Just Right

Nino has been stuck in the studio for interviews for ten hours, since morning. This is his last job. Predictably, fatigue shows on his face. However, he doesn't really fix his makeup. He doesn't wear any in the first place. Unusual in the entertainment industry, where most people put their best face forward with makeup and styled hair. When asked why, he laughs, "It's likely because I have no interest in appearances."

I haven't really used makeup since I joined Johnny's when I was thirteen. I didn't need it when I was a kid, and now that I'm older, even if people ask me what I want to do, I tell them it's not necessary. I think it might be that I don't like putting in that much effort to create myself. Though I understand when people want to see a 'cool' Nino-chan. (smiling) So if there's someone who wants to use makeup and costume for a photoshoot, I don't mind. It's just that personally, I don't see the point. I mean, if I get a pimple, what's the point of hiding it? If it's something you're supposed to hide, then I don't think there's any point in shooting that day. You should only use the pictures you take when someone's at their best, then.

Though he has the consciousness of an idol, he has no desire to be shown as 'cool'.

I mean, I'm not striking. I don't think so of myself, and people never tell me so. (smiling) Though I'm often told I have "a face that's just right." That might be rare in Johnny's. Looking like I do, I don't think I could have portrayed an overwhelmingly attractive guy like Hana Yori Dango's Domyouji. And if I said I wanted to, my mom would never forgive me. (smiling) But with a face like this, I've been told that I'm good for playing parts like Seiji in Freeter, Ie o Kau. And in Stand Up!!, I was the pathetic virgin character, while YamaP was part of the same group of guys but hand a girlfriend and was actually considered attractive. I can't say which is better. Though there are times I've thought I wanted to be more striking, I don't think it's something that can be solved by trying harder.

Appearance shows one's individuality. But he says that's not all.

For example, people who like Aiba-kun don't only like him for his looks, but for the 'something' that he exudes, right? Of course there are probably fans that are there for his face, but those fans, they probably won't stay with us as we get older. Though that's just the way it is. Even if you try to maintain the appearance of youth, it won't really be youth. There's no point in trying to hold onto things that change. And it's not like you can be a success in the entertainment industry, or happy in life, just by being attractive, either. But neither can I say that what's inside is the most important. It's not something that simple. If we knew the answer to what was important, then everyone would be successful, I think.

If people liked each other just for their looks, no one would struggle on their way to marriage.

It's the same thing with romance. You can't guarantee that you'll have a happy romance or marriage just because of someone's looks.

Women are different creatures so I can't really say this with authority, but it seems like women are really concerned about their appearance in ways I can't imagine. But that has nothing to do with romance. I really care nothing about how a person looks. Of course I think it's great when people are pretty or cute, but that doesn't mean that I necessarily want to date them. Everyone's like that, right? If the only qualification to liking someone was the way they looked, no one would have any trouble with marriage. (smiling) To me, someone that can continue to stay at my side is more important than someone that's beautiful. Every year my understanding of how difficult that really is grows. I'm really an exceptionally frustrating guy. (smiling) And what's more, I'm single-minded in being at home doing only the things I want to do. Could you put up with that? And what's more, I'd want not only someone that can stay by my side, but someone who really, truly understands me. In other words, I think what I'm looking for is someone who will be like a mother to me.

A mother?! Women don't want to be the mothers of their lovers.

I know that! Women want to be women no matter what age they become, and I fully respect that, but on the other hand, men want to be pampered. (smiling) But you know, I think that men who want their lovers to be like their mother, and women who don't want to play the role of a mother to their lovers are quite similar. The part where neither will back down with what they want, and it will be a clash of egos. It's an unproductive quarrel, but so long as that unproductive quarrel continues it might be unexpectedly peaceful. Because people usually can't maintain that sort of thing.

When talking with Nino, his repeated declaration of "There is nothing that doesn't change" comes back again and again, be it on the topic of work, love, self, or whatever else.

Even when the photos that were taken of me today are published, I will have aged a month already. But I think that's fine. To go against time is more frightening. I find those who live without a single wrinkle on their faces to be more unattractive, so when the time comes for me, I'll just be myself.
