I remember having a conversation with Amber once about cartoon characters and how silly it is that they always have to have some accessory, usually a bow but sometimes it's lipstick or a purse or whatever, to indicate the character is a girl. And it's true -- characters without obvious girly accessories are assumed to be male. Even Ellie knows

Ah, unpacking gender assumptions using cartoon characters. ;) I admit, it never occurred to me Blue would be a girl - I've never seen the show.

Omigosh! I could have sworn Blue was a boy! This is weird!!

LOL...the more you think about it, the more you realize how often you see boy characters as being the 'default' and girl characters as 'other' (i.e. with a bow, with big eyelashes, with a dress, etc). If there is an ambiguous character, it is almost always male. I actually wonder if Blue is a girl specifically to fight that trend? I just did a quick google search on the topic, and apparently I'm not the only who who thinks that!
