my grandparents were living in Richland, Wash. when my mom was born. My granddad was a chemist working with the nuclear program.

Interesting. And it makes sense given your granddad's job.

To generalize, I think young people (guess I can only speak for myself) are eerily accepting of things that incite suspicion later...Go Colonialism! uh, waitaminnit...
