If It's Only August, How Come It's Already September?

Wherein My Calendar Seems to Have Gone GollywhumpusOur denomination has, as do many other Christian churches, an ecclesiastical calendar. It has seasons, such as Advent, Christmas, Pentecost, and so on. There are even specific colors (red, white, green, purple) assigned to those seasons and most churches follow the progression--the pastors' ( Read more... )

My mother used to be the secretary to the Methodist District Superintendent (there are about 10 districts in the state, IIRC). It sounds like you're the secretary to - or on the staff of - the bishop (AKA staff to support the whole state). Or are you on the National Staff?

Whichever - mom used to tell stories about organizing and attending meetings. Not only was she the DS' secretary, she was also the choir conductor for the church we went to - which automatically put her on a couple of local committees, which meant that she ended up attending as member some of the meetings she organized. Lots of fun!

Well, I'll be darned. I didn't know that about you (or rather, about your mom)! How cool is that? *smile*

No, I'm not national staff; in duties, responsibilities and area served, my office is closest in structure to your Bishops. We are the next governing level up from individual congregations, so though we skip the step of the smaller districts & superintendents, some of our work is probably quite like that as well.

New Mexico, though geographically very large, is lightly populated, so the territory we cover is huge, relative to membership (and just plain huge, when you're driving it!). We have the southern/eastern area, roughly 40% of the state, and the office in Albuquerque has most of the rest. (One lone, tiny congregation in farrrrr western NM is actually in the Tucson, Arizona "district"; there's only so far anyone can be expected to travel for meetings!) The northern office has maybe 40 or so churches and probably three times our membership (I don't recall offhand what their numbers are); we serve 22 congregations and about ( ... )

I used to refer to that time of year as the "zoo season." Of course, for us it was when conventions, celtic festivals, renfaires, etc. started. Throw in assorted family occasions [on both sides], gaming, club meetings, etc., and it can get exceedingly busy. There were many times in those years [before we started cutting back on the smaller cons, to save up for WorldCon] when Himself was heard to look forward to going back to work, so he could get some *rest*. ;)

Your zoo season sounds wonderfully productive. Remember what I said about deadline adrenaline being so stimulating? Not only do you get the rush, you get to feel all virtuous about it.

Which is cool--you deserve it. sunlizzard, our favorite, felicitous facilitatrix--that's you. :)
