I'm obsessed with memory, even though I think I have a fairly average to lower-than-average capacity for remembering events and experiences.
20 Years Ago:
1. I was only a few months old.
2. I still lived in NYC.
3. My father was not yet diagnosed with AIDS.
15 Years Ago:
1. I was "timed-out" in class for the first time and still remember the shame. the shame!
2. I go home with Besty on the bus without telling my mom. She freaks out. (This may have only been 14 years ago).
3. My mom and my step-dad started dating.
10 Years Ago:
1. My cousin Ed committed suicide.
2. I get a dog (finally!).
3. I start writing my first book, about a girl who shape shifts into animals. Although it was ahead of its time, sadly, it was abandoned at 60 pages.
5 Years Ago:
1. Betsy and I "break up." I try to make a mix tape as a fitting send off, but can only think of three songs, and they were all by Ani DiFranco.
2. I lose real contact with Ivelis, Nadia, and the boys. My group changes into a clique of girls with a lot of problems.
3. I write bad, melodramatic poetry.
4 Years Ago (2000):
1. Started dating Chris, after a series of stop and starts.
2. Won city conference in the 2-mile. 13:58.
3. Go to Spain for a month in the summer - hate my host family, who won't let me lounge on the couch because it's improper. Go to Morocco with my family - love it.
3 Years Ago (2001):
1. The year of the AP tests - I took 6, and almost killed myself with work. It was worth it later on.
2. My grandmother dies of throat cancer after years of smoking. She dies only after my aunt lies to her and tells her that it's after my birthday, that we celebrated and everyone was happy.
3. Best year of Cross Country ever. After the team wins 3rd overall at conference, I go home and cry. Karl and Chris have no idea what to do, and go out to buy me three types of ice cream.
2 Years Ago (2002):
1. Won city conference in the 4x800 with Heather, Chrissy, and Tracy. Take that, King!
2. Had to decide between Brown and NYU - made the best choice ever.
3. Started school at NYU - met Trudi & co, struggled to finish the season of Cross Country.
1 Year Ago (2003):
1. Road trip to Sandusky Ohio to ride the world's largest rollercoaster.
2. Chris went to Germany.
3. Started drinking - my first night was in Liz's small, hot apartment. I miss playing catchphrase.
1 Week Ago:
1. I had just come back from the end of the world (Patagonia).
2. Spent a lovely 3 hour long brunch with Rach and Dani, discussing how weird it's going to be to go back to NYC.
3. Visited Pablo Neruda's grave with my mom.
Yesterday:
1. Studied the ethics of intervention for one of the three tests I have coming up this week.
2. Ran with Rach. So happy to be running again.
3. Went to a gay club, and almost didn't pass for 18. Bodes well for returning to NYC and trying to pass as 21.
Today:
1. Woke up and rushed out of the apartment to go to the Chilean Social Forum to hear panelists discuss torture and its effects on society.
2. Came into the Santiago Times and got slammed with a lot of work.
3. Looking forward to eggplant parmesean for dinner.
Tomorrow:
1. Work again.
2. Spend fruitless hours searching the city for the alphabet for my photography class.
3. Vaccinations of Hep A, Typhoid, and Yellow Fever so that I can go to Bolivia on the 30th!
