Summary: Ahiru gets asked a difficult question.

"When's your birthday, Ahiru?" said Pike, screwing up her forehead. "I can't seem to remember it."

"Oh no!" Lilie exclaimed. "Poor Ahiru. Did everyone forget your birthday? How you must have suffered at Pike's party yesterday!" She latched on to Ahiru's shoulder with force. "I don't remember it being celebrated last year, either. Don't worry! We'll console you."

"Ah...ah...could you let go of my arm?" Ahiru stuttered, feeling the bones of her shoulder grind together.

"See how sad she is!" said Lilie, framing Ahiru's watering eyes with her hands.

"That's your fault," Pike muttered.

"No way!"

"So when is it? Pike asked, undeterred.

Ahiru floundered, waving her arms. "Um, um, it's..."

She couldn't remember: she really, truly, couldn't remember. Her past was fuzzy in some respects, but she knew for stone cold certain that the day she'd come into the world as a tiny, new duckling, she hadn't inscribed the day's date on to the remnants of her shell.

"...It's next week. On, ah, Thursday."

Lilie's face fell. "Oh. But, but, you must be crushed that everyone nearly forgot your birthday."

"Haha, I, I really don't mind..." said Ahiru, a hand behind her head.

"See, Pike? See how bravely she's bearing up! Even though she's devastated."

"She looks fine to me."

What about Mytho? Ahiru wondered. When was his birthday? Did a character from a book even have one?

***

Someone bought her a yellow rubber duck for her birthday. She let it bob along in the bathtub water alongside her, and felt distinctly over-sized.
