Geek Week!

May 09, 2011 11:22

I haven't done a life post in a while. Last week was all kinds of awesome so I wanted to capture it.

Last Wednesday was May the 4th - a date I've been punning since the second (/fifth chapter) movie.
This year I learned about two (TWO) events to celebrate those who get the pun! The first was a variety show with costume contest, some great fanvids (like Troops in the form of COPS), and a geek off with great prizes. There were also numbers of my convention friends there too!

I left that show at its intermission b/c another group I know was doing a Burlesque show entitled Nerd Girls: The Boobies Strike Back. It started with a hand bell group (fabulously named Pavlov's Dogs) whose six members did renditions of the Theme to 2001 aka Also Sprach Zarathustra by Strauss. They also did the Star Wars theme and the Imperial March *Grin*

There were several burlesque acts, like the two replicants from Blade Runner -the hair was amazing! - Slave Leia to Britney Spears' Slave 4 U; and Barbie Jedi (whose sash & light sabre were pink!). The comedy was provided by a number of female comics, as well as male comics all of which had at least one nerd/geek aspect to their act.

I love my city!

This weekend was Free Comic Book Day that I participated in for the first time, with another Browncoat elizalavelle! We hit several comic book stores and then we hit Toronto Comic Arts Festival where I met a few of my webcomic artists LIVE.

Joel Watson of Hijinks Ensue drew me an 11th Doctor sketch *grin* apparently Seuss hats ARE cool. Also met Danielle Corsetto of Girls with Slingshots. Ran into four of my geek peeps too!

After that hit a Jane's Walk (in honour of Jane Jacobs) where we were blindfolded for part to learn to listen to the soundscape of the city.

Saturday Night was NerdGirl Pinups (the same group who did the Burlesque) had a GeekGirls' Game night. There were card games, RPGs, but I opted for Hitchcock version of Clue! They also made me feel better because the way to the Game Night (held at a downtown bar) I, in my geektastic braided pigtails, ran into an ex-boyfriend on his bachelor party evening. The fact I don't have a date for the June wedding yet, not a stressor at ALL. *lesigh*

On Sunday I did call my mom, got a few fiddle-ly details done and then did two more Jane Walks, one based on the architecture around the Royal Ontario Museum, and another based on the Rosedale Ravine and how planning only for cars has cut this part of the city off from other uses. So some older history and some urban planning. AND THEY WERE FREE!

And that was my great geek week!
