LJ Idol 11 Week 4

Scotland has ruined me.

Two years ago, in celebration of turning the big 5-0, seven of my close relatives and I took a ten-day, dream trip to Scotland. I say it was a dream trip because it was my long-time dream to go to Scotland. I’m not entirely sure why. I don’t think there’s an overabundance of Scottish heritage in my DNA. It more likely stems ( Read more... )

I'm so delighted you had such a wonderful time in Scotland. I was born there, and I'd wager you saw more in your holiday than I did when we lived there.

Loved seeing the pictures, and "home" through your eyes!

I think that's fairly common for "natives" to not see so much of what their home has to offer. I lived outside NYC growing up and didn't make it to the Statue of Liberty until I was grown and married with kids and had moved to Colorado. It was just something that was always there, and "I'll see it someday".

I have so many pictures! I made a book through Shutterfly and had the toughest time deciding what to put into the book.

I also love Scotland - have never met anyone who lived there and didn't like it!

We ate at pubs (yes, we (I) tried haggis),

And did you get a chance to try deep friend Mars bars? :-P

Aren't they a Glasgow specialty? Along with pies both "healthy" and "normal". When my stepfather was in the chip shop there, someone asked for a "healthy pie" and was given... a pie. Curiosity raised, he paid attention when someone else asked for a pie, was offered healthy and said, "no, just normal." ... He was given a deep-fried pie. A deep. fried. pie. And called it "normal".

I was actually surprised at how good, fresh and healthy the food we had was. People always say that British food is the worst, but everything we tried was pretty fantastic.

I did not try deep fried Mars bars, but it was the first time I've ever had millionaire shortbread - which is to die for. I've tried several times to replicate it, but it just never comes out quite right. :(

I’ve always wanted to go to Scotland too. And Norway. And Italy.

Like you, I fear I won’t get enough time to see everything when I visit a place I love. I can’t imagine only going once, though in my case, I’d have been lucky to even go once (I didn’t get to Europe until this year, and I’m in my mud 30s).

I’m moving to Europe now though. It has ruined me too (that and a French man).

This is only my second trip to Europe. I was fortunate enough to go to Greece as a 12 year old through a generous grandmother and a school sponsored trip. It only whetted my appetite for travel.

I'm determined to make it back, whether to Scotland or another country. When people give you the "if you had unlimited funds" scenario, mine always involves extensive travel. :)

I understand the feeling. I went to Puebla, the city, once, and everything in my soul just told me I should live there. I couldn't tell you to this day what it was, but if I have a chance to do so, I may buy a house there when I retire.

That's how I feel. It's likely highly romanticized, but it's a comforting fantasy. :)
