LJ Idol 11 - Week 11, Part 2

Jan 15, 2020 12:29

We are being forced out of the home we’ve lived in for the past eight years. It’s nothing we’ve done, and not really something avoidable on the part of our landlords.

We rent our primary residence from the church next door. It all began when the house was sitting empty and no longer used by the congregation.  My husband worked there (as the ( Read more... )

Would the cost of that weekly four hour drive be less than the difference between the rent of your current place and the mortgage on the Nebraska place? Because if so, that sounds pretty worth it to me.

It would be way less, even if I rent a hotel room for a night, which wouldn't necessarily be a weekly probability with family still in the area (who have offered a spare room). It really would be a win for us if the boss lady goes for it.

In 1980, Denver housing was twice the cost of Albuquerque housing, and Albuquerque was NOT cheap!!!
Colorado is expensive.
How far is the new (old?) house from the airport in Denver, Omaha, or St Louis? Or even Des Moines?

It's about four hours to Denver, four hours to Omaha. There is a small airport with daily flights to Denver if I was ever really in a bind. :) I've just always been spoiled enough to have an airport within the area I've lived in, usually no more than an hour's drive.

Congratulations on your potential new life in another space... sorry it's come by the hardship you're in, but hope things work out with your boss.

I’m hoping she’s amenable to it. I plan on talking to her in detail by March.

I hope things work out for you. You're lucky to have a plan; your boss should definitely keep you, since she's so inexperienced.

I’m counting on that idea of job security and her reliance on my knowledge base to give me a bit of an advantage. *fingers crossed*

I'm wondering if it would be possible for your husband to get a better job where you are, since the opportunity for employment is probably better there.

Then you could possibly fix up the shack a little bit and sell it, and be looking toward buying something inexpensive in a place you'd rather live. ;)

But I do wish you luck with however it turns out. :D

My husband doesn’t work. He is on disability due to health issues. He’s recovered some (we’re not worried he isn’t going to last the year like we were - it was a scary time for awhile there) but isn’t able to return to work because he’s hasn’t regained the stamina it takes for a workday. My income is our main support.

Our actual plan is to fix the house up and spend at least a year there. Depending on how we like living there, and a few other factors, we may eventually sell and move elsewhere. It truly will be an adventure.

Ah, I see. My situation is similar-- my husband went on disability about 10 years ago. I'm glad your husband is out of the woods compared to earlier. That would be terrifying.

I hope the house is actually much more than a shack. When I think of "shack" and "Nebraska winter," I worry!

It's not that bad of a "shack". That's my own exaggeration. It weathers the winter just fine. :) It's in SW Nebraska, and I think the winters there are more mild than what you would generally think of as a Nebraska winter.
