LJIdol 11 Week 1

The beginning had been far less esoteric, more of an accident really. There were no bright lights, no doctors and nurses, no humming machines or the beeping symphony signifying vital signs. The beginning had been beautiful. Sun bright in an azure sky, snow glistening around the base of evergreens, and the temperature surprisingly warm for the mid- ( Read more... )

This is a take on the topic I really didn't expect. I love the strangeness of this and the unanswered questions that are left. I don't think they need to be answered by the narrative, and I like that they're not -- we're limited by what your protagonist knows or doesn't, and ultimately we see things through her. This was such an interesting story with a fascinating conclusion. It seemed to be about conjoined twins who had reached the point where if they remained joined both would die, but if they were separated, only one would die (Melinda). How awful the conversations leading to their decision must have been.

I like this interpretation. What I imagined was a similar idea but more SF: that a woman about to die had been spiritually boosted by an alien being who then had become part of her, like a second personality. But even though it prolonged the life of the human, the alien was trapped and unhappy. So they had made the decision to be separated, which allowed the alien to free herself and take on her on physical form again, but the human -- now extremely old -- died.

I was going more for symbiosis. Kind of like Venom? Shanna is the stronger being, but neither of them thought one wouldn’t survive. Although Shanna had an idea that would be the case.

Lovely, ethereal story, and very calming despite the sad ending.
