Weight (Carol/Liz)

The Stone Gods

The first time Liz properly meets Carol’s parents is at dinner at the mansion. Liz is thrilled, she’s been Carol’s best friend for four years and finally she merits an invitation. But Carol is nervous, hiding it poorly behind a too cheerful smile.

Liz thinks the night goes well but Carol is more and more withdrawn and the next day in school Liz finds her smoking too much in the bathroom.

“You don’t know them, Liz,” she says. “The things they said after you left…”

“To hell with their fancy world,” Liz smiles and pulls Carol into a tight hug.

Oranges are Not the Only Fruit

Richard Lockwood takes Carol to prom-night and Liz joins Tara who pretends to be a feminist and not give a damn but actually cried for days that she’s not thin/busty/pretty enough for any guy. Liz watches Carol dance with Richard and tells herself she’s normal and not… she can’t even think the word.

Three hours later Carol is crying in her arms because Richard fucked some bitch named Cindy. Without thinking Liz leans in and the kiss makes her heart stop. Carol just watches quietly for an eternity. And because things can’t get worse, Liz finally says:

“I love you.”

The Passion

Carol’s back arches wantonly under Liz’s fingers as their bodies move together, limbs a messy tangle, heated kisses brushed against lips, neck, skin, breasts. Thighs pressed against the other’s silky, wet heat they ride the waves of wild pleasure until they are coming together, crying out into the quiet of Liz’s flat.

Liz smiles up at Carol and brushes a lock of soft hair out of her lover’s eyes.

“What’s wrong,” she asks but Carol just gets out of bed quietly. “Carol?”

Carol lights a cigarette with shaking hands and she can’t meet Liz’s eyes.

“Richard and I are engaged.”

Written on the Body

The first thing Liz thinks when she opens her eyes in hospital is Idiot. There was a random vampire in town and a scared junior officer accidentally shot Liz. She still managed to stake the monster before she passed out, though.

“The doctor said it might scar, he was a bit suspicious why exactly you had a wooden bullet in the thigh.”

“What are you doing here, Carol?” Liz asks tiredly, trying to ignore the sting in her chest.

“I missed you,” Carol says and squeezes Liz’s hand but Liz pulls away immediately and ignores her until she’s finally gone.

Weight

Carol watches her name on the card, it is not in Liz’s handwriting and even now that hurts more than it should. She knows what must be in it, Liz’s baby was due almost a week ago and the whole town has been on edge. Carol remembers telling Liz about being pregnant and hates that Liz had never bothered to tell her, just like her only visit last month to see Tyler was painfully official.

Carol opens the card.

Caroline.

She presses her hand over her mouth and cries, long and deep and silent, only witnessed by her newborn son.
