Oh, it was rough. I can't really gauge how much I'd spend normally, because I bought almost every Christmas gift I sent there this year and not too many things for myself, but it was pretty close!

My tip for the GRE: get one of those guide books that helps you figure out how to study, then do that. If you have a friend who's also studying for the GRE, do that. Don't wing it.

One of the best/worst ways I've heard of giving yourself an incentive to meet deadlines is to break it down into concrete tasks (for example, finish studying for a specific section of the GRE, make flash cards, whatever), then put money into envelopes--say, $1 or $5--and give the stamped envelopes to a friend. Address the envelopes to a charity you hate (IDK, maybe you hate guns? So the NRA, for example. Or you hate homophobes, so some anti-gay org, for example.) If you don't finish X task by Y date, the friend will agree to mail the envelopes to the despised charity. So it really kicks your ass into getting things done!

I do have two books to study from, and the official websites does have a few free things to use, so I don't plan to wing it, I'm just really good at cramming the night before and I feel like that is not the best plan.

It's better to sail into the exam room and feel like you've studied your heart out than to trudge in and wish you'd studied more, you know?

This, when it comes down to it, is what I need to hammer into my thick skull.

You've made a lot of really important points that I am going to try my best to actually absorb and use, because ugh I am terrible at studying and this is exactly the kind of reality check I need.
