What follows is a rant, a tirade, a temper tantrum. If you've been with me thus far, you are used to that. I've been holding back, but here we go again
( Read more... )
A good rant is a thing of beauty, and this is among the best I've read in a long time...if ever.
I was driven through New Haven once, by a grad school friend who had been a Yale undergrad. I thought it was as depressing as anywhere I'd been to that point, which included some of the most desolate areas of Philadelphia, Camden, and Trenton. I gather that things haven't improved since 1993.
I sincerely hope that you can escape as soon as possible.
It's quite astounding, isn't it? Things have improved somewhat because the crack epidemic has waned. But as a mentor of mine (who lives elsewhere) said to me, about the best thing you hear about New Haven is that it isn't as bad as it used to be.
Maybe you just need to have a bunch of friends sign a contract stating that they will do an intervention if you're still there after a few more years -- that way even if the place does rot your brain so much that you can't see how bad it is, your friends will pull you out & once you start breathing real air again, you'll come to your senses.
Move honey - you hate it there, have forever, so move. I know it's not that easy, but really, get out - you need to be in a space that works for you - and your mental and emotional health matter. Wish I could actually do something. Hugs
I've just read "Gods of Money" by William Engdahl (from Amazon, couldn't find it anywhere else). It was mind blowing, the best book I've read in 10 years. It could be a bit of an antidote to the twits you have to work to avoid. It's very explanatory about a lot of things, including poverty in New Haven.

Sorry to hear New Haven sucks....I've been there a few times, but always for a specific purpose, so I haven't seen the side you describe.
Hope you can get out soon....I know what it's like to live in a city you hate.
