The tan is what makes him thoroughly East Coast working class Italian. He's the middle-aged gay version of Jersey Shore. But probably nicer.

He's a haircutter, so he can probably use the tanning bed where he works as much as he likes.

The key here is sparingly. A tanning bed does have one utility: you can give yourself a little color before going to the tropics in winter and reduce the odds of burning there. Or give your mood an occasional lift. But we're not plants, and we don't photosynthesize!
