Also, don't assume that just because a child knows how to swim that they're automatically exempt from needing to be watched. Hell, I'm a very good swimmer, and I almost drowned a few years ago.

Nothing like that kind of reminder to make me go hug my kid for a long time. Kid does not know how to swim at all, so pretty much I never let go of him in a pool >_

Best (and last) line from the article:
"Remember - children playing in the water make noise. When they get quiet, you get to them and find out why."

I've long ago lost count of the number of times Pygment and I have looked at each other and said "The kids are too quiet; let's go see what's up."

Side note: in children, almost all cases of cardiac arrest are secondary to respiratory derangements. In other words, something interferes with the child's ability to move air into/out of his or her lungs, and after holding out for a seemingly impossible amount of time, the heart finally stops. Kiddos don't have enough miles on the odometer to have heart problems -- they still have "factory fresh" hearts that are designed to keep on beating. When their hearts do stop, it's bad news.

My question to you the party host is "how many adults in the room carry valid CPR certifications?"

If you need help finding a course, let me know. I'm a certified instructor.
