There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays (part 3)

Hanging out with the parents was a lot mellower:  just them, Chuy, their little chiphead, and cousin Lucita, who was staying with them on a training rotation over from the Echegaray, her homeship.  It got even better when, a couple hours into sitting around, just talking all easy, Saenz wandered in, looking much chiller.

Saenz fist bumped all around, gave Mamí a little peck on the cheek, then looked at Chuy till he shoved over and made room so she could plonk herself down next to Blos on the cushy upholstered bench.

“You’re really a marshmallow inside, aintchu?”  Chuy said, scooting over.

“You really wanna find out?”  Saenz said, deadpan.  The kind of deadpan that cleared bars.  Fast.

Lucita, who’d never met her, was getting kind of wide eyed.

“I bet you squish in the middle,”  Chuy went on, voice going all cocky asshole.  He picked up his hand, first finger pointing, and poked Saenz in the middle of her hard, flat, pelotari belly.

Lucita just about swallowed her tongue.

“Squeeeesh,”  Saenz said, voice all high and squeaky, and flopped down on the bench.

Everyone but Papí had been keeping a straight face, and he’d been carefully looking away from Luz.  Now everyone broke up, Lucita laughing hardest of all-good kid.

“One of these days that’s gonna get you in trouble,”  Stuart observed, almost not still snorting and giggling.

Saenz was laughing, too, and leaned into Blos.

“You’re such an asshole,” Blos said shifting to get them cozy.  “You too, bad twin.”

“You’re official now,” Mamí told Luz.  “No one’s an Irigaray Blos these days till Saenz and Chuy prank them.”

“So I’m not official?” Stuart said.

“You are the gold star exception that proves the rule,” Blos told him.

“Me and little sharebrother pranked Chuy,”  Saenz said.  “Good times.”

Lucita looked intrigued.  “Whadja do?”

Stuart grinned all evil.  “We made Chuy think Saenz and I were sleeping together.  He was so freaked. It was great.”

Chuy was laughing and nodding.  “I even sat down with Mamí for a talk about what to do.”  He looked at their mother.  “How you kept a straight face through that I will never know.”

Mamí laughed.  “I ride herd on a bunch of engineers.”  She turned to their trainee cousin.  “It’s quite a skill set that rating takes.”

Ice not just broke but shattered, they all settled in.  The Echegaray was the MG’s bid ship, so Blos and Saenz knew a bunch of folks over there, and the chiphead knew of them.  Luz caught them up on the doings, and the scuttlebutt.  Maybe they could swing a little visit that way before they got back on their run line.

Saenz felt just right kinda slouched over and tucked up against Blos’s side, Blos’s arm over her shoulder.  Chill and untense and all kinds of good.  Blos rubbed her cheek a little on the prickly-velvety of Sanez’s hair, buzzed close for the jump headset.  Stuart gave them a little raised eyebrow look, like he expected them to take off for their own cabin soon.

And yeah, Blos was most definitely looking forward to that, but it was good to sit here, too, and let the words run over and around and through and just be the fuck home.
