There was many things that would suddenly change drastically about Hinata’s evening. During the times the sunset would change colors, spitting bright orange hues among the blue sky; outside of the compound during dusk hours. Natsu would always remind her to come in before the light faded and when the first shine of a star came into view, it was her time.
This time she did not come home. She had wandered off outside of the compound grounds, after a grueling session of sparring with her cousin who only eyed her with a hate so intense she felt scalded.
Hinata ran, she ran as fast as her little feet could take her, rocks pricked at her heel and she felt the weeds around her wanting to wrap itself up her tiny legs, ready to swallow her. It felt like thorns, like she was fighting sharp tethered skewers to get away.
It was dark and the lights that shone above her was the moon, watching her. She never felt safe with the glow surrounding, a forewarning at best.
When the brush became too wild, Hinata stopped, gripping her training pants tightly, the short hair tickling her face, as she felt the tears run down her cheeks.
“Hey!” She hears a voice and she startles suddenly, blinking around searching for the sharpness of that call.
“You! Hey!” It calls again and she turns, seeing bright blue eyes reminiscent of the sky before it became dark, before the moon woke and night took over. It’s the bluest blue she’s ever seen.
“What’re you doing out here so late?” The voice asks again and Hinata shakes, wanting to hide but nearly slipping on a moss covered rock. She sees blonde hair like the color of corn and whiskers. How odd.
“It’s too late to be out here, you know! Believe it! I always get lost, are you lost? I can help you get home!” The voice is kind and warm, as if it holds a promise. Hinata blinks, as the voice and the face are all closer to her. This person smiles at her.
“Oh! I know you, you go to the Academy too! Hey maybe you could help me with my ninjutsu, Iruka-sensei is always complaining about how I do mine without any studying, he’s always getting onto me, you know!” Hinata blinks at this boy, she has seen him. He’s always by himself by the swingset, always alone.
“You know, you have really weird eyes!” The boy bursts again and she winces at his boisterous insult, but then he makes a face again and grins as bright as the sun, Hinata diverts her eyes elsewhere. “Your eyes look like the moon, you know! Wish I had pretty eyes like that!” He laughs then and it’s infectious; he’s in tattered clothes, the same ones he always wears during class and Hinata flushes despite herself.
“My name’s Uzumaki Naruto, you know! I’m going to be Hokage one day!”
Hinata nods and Naruto beams. “What’s your name? You haven’t talked once, it’s kinda weird.” He makes a face again, crossing his arms over his chest. Hinata feels her heartbeat pick up, worried she’s doing something wrong again.
Her face heating up again and she fiddles with her fingers, this was always something she struggled with. She’s tried working on her speech with Ko and Natsu who help guide her with it, but she still worries over it.
“I’m…” Hinata trails off and Naruto raises an eyebrow, leaning closer to hear her better, Hinata looks up gripping her hand even tighter. “I’m Hyuga Hinata.” She breathes finally and he blinks. “Woah! You’re the Princess, right!” Naruto bursts and Hinata shakes her head.
“Eh? Not a princess, but you look like one!” He leans closer to her, analyzing her and Hinata looks down, not wanting to look him in the eye. Naruto hums lightly, his eyes narrowing. “You know, you could definitely be someone of royalty!” He tells her again, Hinata shakes her head, her cheeks reddening again, her heart feeling as if it will jump right out.
“I…” Hinata’s unsure of what to tell him, that she’s not exactly what he expects her to be. She never will be. Suddenly there’s a third voice. “Lady Hinata!” Comes a voice and it’s Ko calling for her. Oh no she’ll be in trouble if she doesn’t head home now, she broke one of the many rules of her home.
“It seems you have to go home, I bet your house is big and you have a nice family!” Naruto grins, rubbing his finger underneath his nose. “Well, anyways! Bye, see you around!” He waves, and runs into the forest, his bright hair and clothes a blur as she stands there, quietly as the sounds of the crickets resound, and there’s a break of a twig, Ko before her, his face contorted in worry.
“Lady Hinata!” He cries sharply, as he looks at her-shaking and covered in muck from running so far. “We must get you cleaned up, Natsu will help you with that. Come, or else Lord Hiashi will be angered with the both of us.” He grabs her gently by the hand, leading her back towards the compound, Hinata turning her head to see if she could find a bright smile and blonde hair.
