I'm so over Capt. Jack

I'll be the first one to admit I haven't been paying too much attention to the Miracle Day news, apart from speculating over the sensationalism of the characters, and the unintentionally funny shots of Eve Myles handling a huuuuuge gun. But, you know, there was always the dashing Capt Jack in the background and, while I could care less if Miracle ( Read more... )

I heard rumors of this interview, although I never did anything about looking it up ( ... )

I like Barrowman a lot, and I realize he's looking out for his career, which is only fair. I could have done without the insensitive remarks after CoE1, in view of the negative reaction, but he was just saying what he believed. Whatever.

It's looking more and more as though Oswald the child killer is going to have some sort of redemptive arc and die a hero. Too bad that's not the way real life goes, but when did RTD ever deal in real issues realistically? Events in Egypt should put the lie to the notion that people would sit back and allow any government to take their children. In the real world, a pedophile is a pedophile until he or she dies; a child killer is someone who derives satisfaction from the uneven power, and that person isn't going to become a hero any time soon.

If there's some sort of connection between the two, or some way in which Jack can like, and perhaps admire such a man, then this is fantasy of the highest or rather, lowest, order and the character of Capt Jack is essentially gone, sold out for a cable show.

It's a little difficult to believe in Oswald's redemptive arc, considering what happened to Jack's....It would appear that Rusty doesn't hold with the idea that redemption is anything lasting--not with the complete dismantling of Jack in CoE.

I'm guessing that Oswald's redemption includes Oswald's personal expiration: he'll be another "good man," a la whatshisface from CoE..... *eyeroll*

Over Capt. Jack...me, too princessofsnark August 14 2011, 05:22:07 UTC
I loved Capt. Jack from the time he tried to steal Rose from The Doctor, when he took her to his invisible space ship. And, when they showed how the Time Agent got his persona as Capt. Jack Harkness, I cried. It was such a sad episode. I loved THE coat and thought Jack was just the most trustworthy, comforting, faithful friend one could have.

Then, he killed his grandson...and, who ever wrote that episode should have been boiled in baby oil. What a crappy thing to write about, no matter what. Now, to see how they are taking the flirtatious gadabout and making him over...I don't think so. They can take the gorgeous Barrowman and dress him like Capt. Jack Harkness, but the man who mourned so over feeling that he'd not protected his brother when they were children isn't the same guy who'd kill his grandson or have a shred of pity for a child molester/killer. Boo to whoever came up with those ideas and to the cast -- shame on you for taking part in that.

I love Capt Jack, too, which is why I hated CoE so much. Russell T Davies destroyed the character, thinking dark = more dramatic. It was more dramatic when Jack realized what he'd inadvertantly done with the nanos and had remorse, finding in the Doctor, someone who could turn his life around.

To th is day, Barrowman touts the partyline, saying that only Jack could do something like kill his own grandson. I guess he wants to continue to be Jack and so he's toeing the line, or maybe he just plays Jack without thinking deeply about the character. Whatever the reason, RTD retro fitted Jack with a new character, one that would turn over a busload of orphans and then kill his grandson to save the world. I keep expecting to find an empty pod where this Jack grew from, because the two are not the same.
