we went over to mo and kris' last night, and that was super fun! their baby was hella cute but also kind of a buttpain, she settled down toward the end of the night though so we had some nice time with them. dinner was... much, much whiter than i would ever normally eat; white rice, chicken in mushroom sauce, and killer tasty lemon and pepper ( Read more... )

This is part of my frustration with journalism as a whole while trying to be involved in international politics, and why I don't like things like economic sanctions. It dumbs everything down to countries, as if those countries are a singular entity that is somehow making a united decision on... everything?? I don't know. It's pretty stupid.

Ugh yeah, seriously. Well, I think it's less defensible in the case of science, because even though the tone of reporting almost always makes it sound like they're talking about the citizens, at least countries do also elect people to represent those countries so one can talk about the actions of the government as representing the actions of the country (even though, again, the tone of reporting usually implies that it's the citizens they're talking about). Science doesn't elect representatives, because again, what's to represent? It's just a way of thinking about things, fundamentally.

Oh my gosh, that dinner! I totally get you about the white thing. My ex boyfriend is white and his family always made meals that we SUPER heavy and left me SUPER bloated. Whereas at home I might have some light Mexican soup or tacos, with him we would have meat in some sort of gravy with either pasta or rice, and then bread with butter. It was always the same. I gained so much weight!!

Great news about the cat!

lmao i... i meant literally white as in the color of the food, not the color of their skin... >.> like the rice was white, the chicken was white, the sauce was white wine/mushroom so it was off-white.

hahahaha it's okay!!! i'm white and i cook very colorful food ;)

i tend to try and cook by color more than anything so meals that are generally in the "beige" aren't usual for me. i eat brown rice and whole grain bread and so on so things like you described, that are all white meat/white bread/butter/pale gravy are really unusual for me - in my kitchen it would be more like dark brown bread, red rare steak, au jus and colorful fruit or vegetables - but maybe normal people don't quantify food by color variety hahaha!

Totally agree with you about science reporting. The papers either mis-report studies or extrapolate to the point of being irresponsible. I have a book called Bad Science actually which I really need to get around to reading soon.
