Help me out here.

Who am I? Who are you? Do we know? Can we know? Better question -- What are we. Are we nothing more than brain and body, or is there more? Does the physicalness of the brain matter? Can a different brain that is exactly similar to ours contain our same identity? Is it possible for there to be more than one me? What is it that encompasses that very ( Read more... )

Ha, you said "brain matter".

Secondly, you cannot ask a question of what would happen if this or this was replaced and then ask follow up questions that would already have to be defined before the replacement took place. So I think these questions are all gay -- I mean, good, but you can't ask them. Some of them are not exactly needed for the replacement, but the general questions relating to what the difference would be is not... possible? I guess. If it wasn't you, then it wouldn't be you, and an exact replica would only be the MATTER, not the MIND, so your memories would not even exist. You cannot copy consciousness or the entity of you.

You fag.

An exact copy of a brain would include memories.

It is my belief that the MIND is made up of the MATTER. With different matter, there is a different mind, even if it's exactly similar.

So we're in agreement, one way or another.

Yeah, your memories are the same, but do you think the personalities would be the same?

Yes, if the brain is an exact copy, the personalities would be the same.

I think the best analogy for my feelings on the issue is this:
I believe replacing you're brain with an exact replica would be like replacing a hard drive on your computer and then reloading all of your old data and preferences. All the same information and programs would be there, but your Word program wouldn't have your most recently viewed documents, your browser wouldn't have it's favorites, your background would be reset to Windows Standard. It'd be like having to reconnect all the links your brain had made in the past, which ultimately they might be the same, or maybe you would forget a few, or no longer understand why you found Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny so amusing.

You'd be yourself, but lacking your history and temporary internet files.
