Matt Rawle aside, the acting was superb - Elena Roger gives off this air of knowing more about Eva than we do, and she's an amazing dancer. Phil Quast doesn't get nearly enough to do, though he looks good in uniform (ahem, sorry) and has great chemistry with Elena... Oh, and gropes her a lot o_0
Orchestration is great, they've given the score a heavier tango feel to it. Same with the dancing.
But it's really confused as to what it's trying to get across - I thought, are they trying to make this a satire on the cult of celebrity, or on politics, or what? Because if you take it just as a musical, it's got great songs, but not much of a plot.
I also thought it was too short - each act was only 50 minutes long - though I've seen Les Misérables too many times and now have this idea that all musicals should be of arse-numbing length ;-)
/end journalist whinging.
If you want more pictures for icons, the show's colour brochure has tons of pretty (and huge!) glossy pages...
I feel the same way about Juan Peron in the musical. The character has little depth (other than being an indecisive slimeball), and an actor such as Philip Quast could be even better in the role, if he had better material. Honestly, I really should research the actual man before saying anything else. :)
I've only seen the US National Tour, which came this February, but I have heard about the changes in the orchestration and the choreography. The tour gave off the impression of a satire, but I agree with you when you say it has great music and little plot. I would like to see Evita again; I may have a different impression of it.
(Sorry if I'm not making much sense, but the heat is making me loopy.)
I love souvenir brochures, so I may check that one out...
And, of course you may friend me. I'll add you back. :)
