I had a very good day today. A combination of sleep and caffeine made me feel particularly alert and alive. I tweaked out about Sapir-Whorf in seminar. I talked more than I ever have in Latin America section. Even in expos, I had all these things to say about irony. I like days like this. Comparative Politics of Latin America. It looks at Latin American political trends, mostly in the 20th century, using Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Peru, and Mexico as case studies.

IMHO, it's totally sick. I knew very little about Latin America going into it . . . and I have learned a whole lot.

i remember a very similar reaction to the whorf essay (is it the one where he discusses what would've happened if the hopi had designed modern physics) in a freshman ling class.. i'm surprised yall read about it at harvard though given how vehemently against it pinker is.

Funny that you mention Pinker. My reading Whorf almost exactly coincided with his lecture on lingustics, and now I'm reading "The Language Instinct" by him.

Talk about mixed messages!

Fucking brilliant, as is your norm. I mean, a Sapir-Whorf discussion in the same post as an assessment of reality as ultimately subjective? You'll have to enlighten me as to these different ways of thinking, epistemology is fast becoming my great obsession. Capital T Truth is nigh on impossible, but that's just a reason to think smarter and better all the time, caffeine or not.
