we all have “celebrities” who have affected us in some way- artists, actors, writers, athletes, musicians, etc. we may not know them, but if something terrible happens to them, it affects us negatively

hi. you don't know me, but my friend told me to read your entry because she and i had been talking about what it's like when a celebrity dies. that was a really insightful and beautiful entry, and i just wanted to let you know that i too grieve for elliott smith as well. i wasn't the hugest fan of his music, but i certainly appreciated him. he was a musician and a person, how could i not appreciate someone who brought music and happiness to people? and, i think it's perfectly fine to cry over someone you've never met. they're still people, and obviously he was in a lot of pain. that makes me sad, and i didn't even know him.
those people who don't believe grieving over a celebrity is warranted are just self-involved. people need compassion, so what if you don't know them?
i totally agree. i cried over his death and i will keep feeling sad over his death. when my aunt asked why i was sad and i told her she said he was a "weakling" and that "a lot of people get help for alcohol and drug abuse, it's just absurd." i don't know why people can't see that someone we admired died and we are allowed to be sad for that. now fans are being bitter towards other fans and it's not helping anyone so they should just shut up.
jaymi, you rock with your grieving cock out. it makes me sad that someone was so sad that they felt the need to do that. i myself battle with depression on a daily basis and it just hurts when you know other people that do as well and then end their life. i'm not familiar with him at all and i admit it freely, but the fact that someone died is a sad fact and anybody that is too scene and bitchy to say mean comments needs to go crawl under a rock. when you admire someone you should always have the freedom to grieve. it doesn't matter if you know them personally or not.
