6 - Questioning Surveys

Mar 18, 2010 13:58

Well, yesterday certainly was...interesting. Guess I shouldn't have expected much more for the holiday. Hope everyone came out of it okay? At least it was better than Monday's. I'm thinking of maybe trying a survey sort-of-thing, just asking how often people get affected by curses, what kind they tend to get hit by, that sort of thing. But I' ( Read more... )

That curse survey sounds like a very interesting idea. I'm certain it would be useful while endeavoring to figure out the workings of this place. I have been toying with the idea of conducting a sort of an ethnographic analysis on the current population of the City, myself. A sort of a study into what type of nationalities and creatures habit this nexus and the comparative ratios of these different types.

[ooc: Ooh, surveys. Brennan is interested, lol.]

Oh, I'm glad you like it! I was trying to decide how useful it'd be- maybe we can't change the curses, but we could figure out who's most likely to be hit with what? I'd been working with something similar to try and predict people's patterns with leaving and returning to the City, but I've sort of hit a wall there. [that would be on notebook #82]

But you say you're going to try and study nationalities? That would be interesting to know, definitely- but the cataloging is probably going to be the hardest part. Some nationalities seem to be analogs to others in other worlds and some people are just...way out of anything else. If you're looking at people from my world, say, there's the normal earth and then alternate dimensions...all of which seem to be separate from any of the other worlds here. But that sort of study would be really interesting, if you could manage to sort all of it out! It could help with my first project, too, looking at trends in the people the City seems to bring here, and the people the City tends to ( ... )

[Brennan doesn't mind rambling as long as the topic interests her, and this does, very much.]

Scientific inquiries are never be superfluous, in my opinion. There will always be someone interested about the results. In this case, I'd personally be intrigued to see any inferences you may be able to draw from your survey, should you go ahead with it.

[There's a brief pause, before she replies in a slightly contemplative manner.]

Yes, you are correct. The extreme amount of variables involved will no doubt present a problem with choosing the correct medium for collecting the necessary data for my study, but also organizing and grouping said information and drawing conclusions from them. The risk of multiple answers that mean the same but are submitted in a different form is significant.

I'm Dr. Temperance Brennan. It's nice to meet you as well, Ms. Burkle. It's rare to hear such like-minded ideas here on the network.

Well, in this case, I'm feeling a lot more confident about it, then. I don't want to be reminding people of bad times, but if more than just me would be interested in what we get out of the questions, it'd be worth it. It's not like I'll be forcing people to answer.

And...well, it'd be a problem, but even if you just got as far as taking down where everyone's from and how they'd identify themselves, I still think it'd be an interesting study. As far as I know, I don't think anyone's done that yet. I know this place is very diverse, but there's also a good chunk of us from Earth, so that might help, too- just to start with a specialized study of people from that planet, maybe?

You have no idea how great it is to hear that someone was thinking of the same sort of thing. Maybe we could actually even understand this place, after awhile! I just get project ideas like that in my head sometimes, especially when I'm not outright working on anything. That particular thought kept coming up, too, so I figured I'd finally ask about it.

Sure thing. I think I know how to get it settled so it won't be quite so obnoxious for you, but I can always just track you down if something real important pops up after that, anyway.

...you want some company now? I can wait if you've got stuff going on.

Well, I can help with that- set it to just turn off after it's left on it's own for a few minutes. [she suspects that may be easier than showing him the off button, but who knows]

I'll be right over, then! See you soon, Angel.

[ooc: LJ is currently being a jerk to me, so if we play this out, I'll be reaaaally slow. Just a warning- hopefully they'll fix it soon. /kicks the website ]

I'm sure no one would mind doing a survey! We all want to know more about the curses and how they work, right? If you want, I'd love to help you get them handed out.

I didn't know you were at the show, Fred. I wish it hadn't gotten messed up on those curse days, but the two shows that did happen were so much fun. Your friend Lorne is really sweet and an amazing director.

Oh, that'd be great! I was planning on doing it mostly through the Network, but I know there's still a bunch of people who don't use it too often. Flyers or forms would work really well, especially if we sort of gravitated around the Welcome Center. Middle of the action, right?

I was helping out the tech crew! It was really fun. And you are completely right about Lorne, he's a sweetie.

If you did handouts and a network thing, almost everyone should be covered. I don't know why that wouldn't work.

Oh, great! No wonder I didn't see you, then... I was down on stage, mostly in the back. Not the back-back, I mean, since I'm too short, but not in the spotlight. You know what I mean.

It'll make for a great sample size.

Oh- yeah, I was just zooming from little thing to little thing in the dark, like a technically-inclined mouse. And I know what you mean. I saw you, you looked great up there! I really should've come to the party after, I realize, but...I'm not great with parties. Too much going on at once, I guess. Anyway, I'm really glad you had fun, too. It looks like everyone did.
