Arrow

So I was listening to the radio on my way back from the gym and there was an ad on for that new show on the CW called Arrow. You know. 'Cause archery is so in right now. Anyway, I didn't realize wth they were talking about at first because it was some dude describing all the injuries some guy (arrow?) sustained. Like covered in scar tissue and ( Read more... )

When I decided I was going to give Max a load of scars, I did a lot of research on how different kinds of wounds heal and what serious face scars actually wind up looking like if you don't have access to cosmetic surgery and man, it is not hot. It's kind of gross. And it just seems like such a cop-out to sprinkle a couple of aesthetically-pleasing scars on someone and claim it as shorthand for them being a badass. If you're someone who engages in life-threatening combat on a fairly regular basis (as I'm assuming this Arrow fellow does), you're not going to look like that. No fight gets paused for "I'm sorry, but when you slash me across the face, could you make it shallow enough not to threaten the integrity of my nose?"

So I really like the anonymous icon. It's some dude with a paper bag over his head. How.... cute? Or creepy. I'm not sure. I just imagine some random person on the other end of the computer sitting there typing and replying to my post with a bag over his/her head ( ... )

You're spot-on re: the gender stuff too, although I think it's interesting that this is an area of pop culture where men and women get shafted evenly (as long as we're not including the comedy trope of less attractive slacker guys winning the hearts of crazy out of their league women): if you are meant to be a hero/heroine or the hero/heroine's love interest, you have to be attractive, and only so much can be done to compromise that attractiveness in the service of plot.
