I am not exactly what you'd call a procrastinator, but I'm also not one of those super-organized people who start their Christmas shopping in August (or right after the previous Christmas when all the Christmas stuff is on sale; I just don't have that kind of energy). I'm usually right in the middle there and so have figured out mostly what I'm ( Read more... )

I've had a year round second job at Horizon in the box office for a few years now, and one of the busiest times is Thanksgiving to New Year's. I've found that I really need unscheduled time to amble around, and look for inspiration. I really, really miss the 2 weeks off you get in school.

Having said all that I am super impressed with what y'all have done with your finances -- that is so great, to work that out together and succeed!!

Reading about your success with that book is inspiring me to make that my one new years resolution. Budgeting is just something I've never really learned, and at 26 I guess it's about time to get on it!

I agree about Christmas though. I LIKE the busy feeling and the entire process of buying/wrapping/giving gifts is ritualistic for me. Heck I even wrapped my boyfriend's gifts and the gifts one of my bosses bought for her daughter. I LOVE it, and the bit that I love is putting on Christmas music/movies, laying everything out in the floor, grabbing the coordinated wrapping paper/ribbons/presents and going to town for a couple of hours. It's one of my very favorite parts. I don't think I'd like spreading it out.

Some of the book is tiresome and poorly written, just to warn you; however, the plan is basically common sense household finances laid out in a way that's easy to follow, and the budgeting worksheets in the back of the book are really good. I've been keeping a monthly budget for years, but his worksheets force you to do it really thoroughly and honestly look at what you're spending.
