So....how do they sound?

They sound great to me, and are respectable if you appreciate experimental music that refuses to bow down to the mainstream music industry's wishes. If you weren't to like it, I think you'd at least respect its inventiveness. You also kind of have to get the producer she works with, Jon Brion, (Incase you're not familiar with him, though you probably are, think composer/filmography of Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, Boogie Nights, Eternal Sunshine, etc.) because although Fiona writes all the music and lyrics, he orchestrates much of the rest around it with her.

SOME of it might be a little too "out there" for some people, though.

I read an interview about a year ago with the two of them that kind of explained their process for working on songs. I really like the fact that while she writes kind of straight-forward, they both take the production and go as far as they can. Based on your description, I think I'll probably like it a lot once I hear it.
