Kame blinked and when he opened his eyes he was back in his living room, and Fairy YamaPi was standing in front of him looking sour - sourer than he already originally looked. The man had his arms across his chest again, and looked ready to burst.
“You wasted the chance,” the fairy said simply, his tone ominously calm.
“Well, it was my first try…?” Kame replied, taking a step back. “YamaPi did not get to confess until the last picture, did he - ?”
“That was a drama! This is real life!” Fairy YamaPi bellowed, and while it annoyed Kame to be yelled at in his own living room, he did flinch a bit from the outburst.
“How many pictures do I have anyway?” Kame changed the topic, letting himself fall on his couch.
“Five - ”
“Just five?!” Kame yelled this time. “But YamaPi had ten!”
“Stop being a fanboy of YamaPi already,” the fairy said with a sneer, and Kame scoffed in response.

Kame had been a bitch in the past about Jin leaving. When they were told about it, it took Kame all of his willpower to not punch Nakamaru - whom he did not really have anything against just that Nakamaru was unfortunate enough to sit beside Kame on that day - and just excused himself politely from the meeting.
Akanishi was not with them on that day, and Kame guessed it was for the best. KT-TUN would have ganged up on him and beat him up then and there. Looking back, Kame wondered if he was angry because he wanted to protect KAT-TUN, or did his rage spring from his own hurt feelings? His resentment over the fact that Akanishi Jin, one of the closest friends he ever had, was leaving him.
Despite everything, Kame was truly happy that Jin was back - because Kame had just been transported to the relatively more recent past that was the Spring of 2007, Cartoon KAT-TUN II You. From what Kame recalled, they had received news of Akanishi’s arrival only the previous night.
Kame was sitting shirtless in front of his dresser backstage. They had finished the programme and in a few minutes, they would be called to deliver an encore performance in which Akanishi would be joining. Kame would have to work on looking surprised that Jin was there, he thought to himself as he wiped his face with a Cartoon KAT-TUN towel.
Sure enough, when he lifted his face from the cloth and just before he could put on a clean shirt, he felt a warm hand on his still rather sweaty shoulder. He turned his face to meet eye to eye with his friend, a grinning Akanishi Jin.
For some reason unknown to Kame, when Akanishi left for America, Johnny called Kame into his office and gave him quite a lecture on various vague things about career and friendship and a load of other mushy things but Kame got the gist of it: Distance yourself from Akanishi if and when he comes back. Kame never questioned Johnny’s instructions and decisions even when they sometimes struck him as unusually strict, but when Akanishi came back, Kame just did not care what Johnny thought.
“A - Akanishi,” Kame managed to say, letting himself smile back at the older man.
The hand that was still on Kame’s shoulder slowly but naturally crawled down his back until Kame found himself in a tight embrace. Kame quickly reminded himself that he should be surprised and ecstatic about Jin’s return, so that he hurried to put his arms around the taller man as well, returning the warm gesture.
“Welcome back, Jin,” Kame shyly said in a bare whisper against his friend’s ear.
He missed Jin. As a friend, and perhaps more than that.
“Thank you,” was Akanishi’s simple reply, but his arms tightened around Kame that made the younger man grin.
Kame felt so peaceful inside. He had been through this before. He could vividly remember how awkward he behaved when Jin hugged him that day. Now, coming back with the knowledge he had, with the experiences that compelled him to go back, Kame was able to better appreciate this moment, this moment he had with Jin.
“Kamenashi-san, Akanishi-san, please standby for encore!” a staff nearby yelled out as Kame and Jin extricated themselves from the hug.
Panic rushed through Kame when he saw the rest of KAT-TUN walking toward them and realized that his chance to confess this time was almost up.
“Jin, I - ” Kame began.
It efficiently stopped Akanishi from joining the rest of the group under the trapdoor of sorts just a few strides away from where Kame was, and the older boy curiously looked at him. Kame opened and closed his mouth several times, but the innocently expectant expression on Akanishi’s face defeated him. The hi-tech trapdoor opened and the mechanism slowly began to lift Koki, Taguchi, Ueda, and Nakamaru through the opening overhead that was the stage. Jin grabbed Kame’s hand and pulled him over, the five men laughing as Kame stumbled a bit while he climbed onto the platform.
They shuffled into their correct spots, Taguchi - Nakamaru - Kame - Jin - Koki - Ueda. Jin glanced at Kame to his right again, wordlessly asking what Kame was going to say.
“Jin, I - ” Kame tried yet again. “Welcome back.”
It was just… it was not the right time.
“You already said that,” Akanishi chuckled and nudged Kame in the side. “Are you that happy to see me that you seem so disoriented?”
Kame stared for a bit, rather surprised with Jin’s comment, but he eventually grinned and decided to just let it all happen. He was just so thankful that Jin was back that he had the guts to put his arm over Jin’s shoulders as the platform finally leveled with the stage, and the stadium erupted with cheers.
Everyone was so happy. In that moment, Kame was so ready, so willing, so exhilarated to tell Jin that he loved him. It seemed so perfect. But he knew it was not right. He gave Akanishi’s shoulder a squeeze, so that the taller man gave him another toothy grin, evidently enjoying the welcoming atmosphere.
Kame could not explain what he was feeling, like he was walking away from his last chance. But the celebration, the high was too much to spoil with a confession that could go awry. They walked off the platform and came forward, shifted positions as instructed and Kame was now standing between Jin and Koki.
As the first notes of Real Face reverberated amid the deafening roar of the crowd, Kame took Akanishi’s left hand in his right. Kame clung to Jin without fear of questioning, because damn, he was happy that the person he loved was back.
