"Writing the Modern JSA," by Starsandsea

Mar 24, 2008 22:02

Please note that this essay is only up to date to issue 11 of the current JSA run. Also, I greatly suspect a lot of it to be incorrect. So, now that I've filled everyone will confidence about it, here it is! ;)

1. A brief history of the JSA, post Crisis.

The JSA was formed in World War II, as a group of 'Mystery Men' who were sanctioned by the Government to protect America while so many solders were away in Europe fighting. Only 5 of the original members of the team now survive, most being killed in the line of duty. The JSA formally disbanded after the events of 'Zero Hour', when they lost 3 members in one blow. (I'm ignoring the Ragnarok event as I can not understand and attempting to explain it may have the effect of driving me insane. Suffice to say the JSA members were involved in a 1000 year long battle.) Some of the members, particularly Green Lantern, Flash and Wildcat assisted the JLA on cases, as seen in JLA 'Justice For All' collection. A few years later, the JSA reformed when Green Lantern, Flash and Wildcat saw how many new heroes there were, and how they needed guidance that the JLA couldn't provide. They reformed the JSA, with many of the new members taking on the names of the former members, such as Mr. Terrific and Dr. Mid-Nite. In some cases, the new members were the children, or grandchildren, of the first members. This made the JSA unique, as its membership comprised of 3 generations of heroes. This is exactly what the JSA is about. It is about family and legacy. It is often commented on, that the original members of the JSA, particularly Green Lantern and Flash, see the younger members as their adopted children. And, as is always the case, although they are teaching the younger heroes how to fight, how to become better people, they are also learning a lot from them, and see them as their inspiration.

2. The members of the JSA during the 1999-2006 run.

These are by no means comprehensive - Wikipedia has far more information about each hero, but these cover the bare facts.

Green Lantern (Also known as Sentinel)
'Sentinel is the big gun of the JSA. The grand-daddy of superheroes.' - Stargirl

Alan Scott, the first Green Lantern, sometimes known as Sentinel, was the first superhero. Alan was a engineer when he discovered a lantern made from a meteorite known as the 'Starheart'. Alan was able to tap into the emerald energy it contained, fulfilling its prophecy to grant great power, and became the Green Lantern, fighting crime, mainly in Gotham City. He became a founding member of the JSA, the headquarters of which was located in Gotham at that time, and remained active until its disbanding. He, along with Flash (Jay Garrick) and Wildcat (Ted Grant), reformed the JSA, but, although the JSA never formally disbanded, after the events of 'Infinite Crisis', Alan was one of the few members to continue participating in the running of the JSA. Recently, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman asked Alan, along with Flash and Wildcat, to reform the JSA as its founding members.

Alan has two children with a woman who he married briefly, without knowing that she had a split personality. She left Alan on their honeymoon, and killed herself after their children, twins Jennie-Lynn and Todd - later the heroes Jade and Obsidian- were born. Alan later remarried, marrying Molly Mayne, his reformed arch-nemesis, the Harlequin. He only discovered Jennie-Lynn and Todd's existence when they were adults, since they spent their childhoods with foster parents. Jennie-Lynn was lucky, and had a good home, while Todd was abused by his foster father. Todd's troubled upbringing was later going to be the cause of much pain, but more on him later. Jennie-Lynn was killed during 'Infinite Crisis', and Alan was grief stricken for a long time. He also lost sight in one of his eyes at this point, but later, thanks to some of Jennie-Lynn's green energies, Alan's sight was 'restored', in a way. He could now see things on the astral plane with his blind eye, such as ghosts. Alan knows he's failed his children, and had taken a vow to never fail them, or the children of the JSA, again.

Alan is shown as having immense will power. During the period when he was known as Sentinel, where the mystical 'Starheart' melded with Alan's body, making him entirely comprised of Green Flame, becoming beyond human, he only bled because he wanted to be seen as human as possible. When his concentration was disrupted, his blood reverted to Green Flame.

Alan mainly interacts with the other two 'main' survivors from the original JSA, Jay and Ted. He interacts slightly more with Jay, with Wildcat describing them as the 'Papa bears' of the JSA. Ted once says that Alan is the personification of the word 'responsible'. Alan and Jay's friendship is evident in the below scans, where some members of the JSA are being visited by the ghosts of their family and friends:

Alan Scott is the hero that all other heroes look up to, especially those who are inheriting their parents', or grandparents' responsibilities.

Flash
The Flash. Most polite person I ever met. As courteous and compassionate as he is fast.' - Ma Hunkel

Jay Garrick is the first Flash. Jay was one of the first members of the original JSA. He was very briefly its chairman in its first incarnation, but left for some time, returning before the JSA disbanded. Jay's powers are a result of a lab accident, which gifted him with the ability to move at incredible speeds. Due to his previous work in labs, along with his work with Barry Allen, Jay is shown as being something of the JSA's 'detective', taking fingerprints from bullets on murder scenes the JSA is involved with, and attempting to teach the younger members of the JSA, such as Stargirl, how it is done. Jay always has a ready word of encouragement for everyone.

Jay is one of the most polite and courteous people on the planet. Wildcat once says that he is the personification of the word 'polite'. Jay is seen, and acts, as a father figure, not just to the JSA's younger members, but to every superhero. Jay is married to Joan Garrick, and, after Max Mercury's disappearance, they take Bart Allen in as their son.

Jay occasionally takes his responsibilities as being the father figure in the JSA, some would say, a step too far. Stargirl and Captain Marvel started a tentative romance, in Captain Marvel's identity of Billy Batson. Jay, understandably concerned at the perceived age difference, talked to Captain Marvel, voicing his concerns. Perhaps if Captain Marvel had revealed his other identity to Jay, he would have been mollified, but Captain Marvel's wisdom wouldn't let him, and he broke up with Stargirl, as well as leaving the JSA. The relationship between Stargirl and Jay was slightly strained after this, but has since mended.

Jay's closest friend in the JSA is Alan Scott, and Alan attributes Jay as the person who 'kept him sane' in the aftermath of his daughters death. Jay is also close to Ted Grant: at one point, Jay is forced to kill Ted so they can escape a trap.

Jay was also forced to kill another team-mate, but this time, it was because of mind control, and it was pure murder. The death of Terry Sloane, the first Mr. Terrific, at Jay's hands from the 'Spirit King' forever haunts Jay, even though everyone agrees he was not responsible for his death.

Jay is one of the most sought-after mentors in the superhero community. He is currently a member of the latest incarnation of the JSA, continuing to teach the younger generations of heroes, and acting as a father figure for all.

Wildcat

Wildcat, Ted Grant, is a former heavyweight world boxing champion. He became Wildcat when his managers drugged one of his opponents, accidentally giving him a overdose, causing him to die when Ted hit him. Ted was arrested for his opponent's murder, his managers not admitting the truth. Ted escaped from police custody and became a fugitive. While he was, he came across a comic featuring the Green Lantern. Inspired by the story of this 'mystery man', Ted donned a costume, and brought his corrupt managers to justice. Wildcat joined the JSA and remained active until its disbanding.

Ted is unusual in the fact that, like Batman, he has no powers. For a long time, he did have an advantage, however. During his boxing days, he was gifted with a magical set of 'Nine Lives'. Ted has since lost all of his extra lives, and is only able to stay one of the world's best fighters because of his exercise regime.

Ted is credited with teaching many of the world's foremost fighters how to fight. He taught Dinah Lance--against her mother's wishes--Catwoman, and was one of the tutors a young Bruce Wayne sought out. Wildcat also has quite the reputation as a womanizer. In addition to teaching Catwoman how to fight, they also had a torrid affair. He has a love/hate relationship with Power Girl, and they frequently clash over her feminist views. But, Ted does have a softer side. For instance, when the JSA Headquarters is infiltrated by the Injustice Society, and Ma Hunkel is frozen in ice, Ted sees to freeing her, letting the Injustice Society go free. While he doesn't view himself as being a father figure, nonetheless, a lot of the younger members of the JSA look up to him. Ted has also set up 'Grant's Gym', where aspiring young fighters can receive tuition. They also, every Christmas, have a dinner for the homeless, though Ted tries to keep this from his friends, in fear that they will think he's going soft.

Ted has had two children, both boys. His first son, Jake, was killed by the Yellow Wasp. Ted recently discovered that he has a second son, Tom Bronson - more on him below. Ted has invited him to join the JSA, taken an active role in his son's life, and had started teaching him how to fight.

Ted is closest to Alan Scott and Jay Garrick, and rounds out a 'big three' with them. He is well known for teasing his fellow members of the JSA, once 'accidentally' letting Power Girl's cat loose from the brownstone. However, Ted is different from Alan and Jay, because they have families outside of the JSA, though they try and tell him that he a member of both of their families. Ted maintains that he just 'trains 'em, and moves on'.

Ted is one of the world's foremost fighters, and without him, it is sure that many of the world's heroes would not be as nearly as good fighters without his tutelage. Ted is currently a member of the newest incarnation of the JSA, and is continuing to train the heroes of tomorrow.

Hawkman

Hawkman has a very complicated history. Since much of it is in conflict with other versions, I'm going to be be sticking with the JSA version of his history.

Hawkman is the latest incarnation of the soul of Prince Khufu, an Egyptian Prince. Along with his soulmate, Princess Chay-Ara, he has been reincarnated for hundreds of years. In all Hawkman's previous lives, he has met with the soul of Princess Chay-Ara, and they have once more become lovers. Until the soul of the princess entered the body of Hawkgirl. She has no memories of the their shared past lives, nor does she have any interest in renewing their love. Hawkman, in a way, seemed unable to process this, honestly confused that Hawkgirl has no interest in him. He tries to win her back, but eventually seems to accept her decision.

Hawkman was one of the founding members of the JSA, and was once its chairman. He doesn't quite participate to the same extent that Green Lantern, Flash and Wildcat do, but he is nonetheless united with them, in that he 'failed' his son, Hector Hall, Dr. Fate.

Hawkman is quick to anger, and rushes into situations with his fists first, but he does have a softer side. Along with Green Lantern, Flash and Wildcat, every year he would go and visit Ma Hunkel, bringing her news of her family. Hawkman also had a famous friendship with the Atom.

Hawkman has returned to be a member of the latest incarnation of the JSA, bringing together the 4 surviving active members of the original team again.

Ma Hunkel

Ma Hunkel, born Abigail Mathilda, was the first Red Tornado, and one of the first female superheroes. Her neighborhood was being tormented by mobs and gangs, so, inspired by tales of Green Lantern, she donned a costume consisting of a cooking pot as a helmet. Although she did not view herself her as a hero, nonetheless she was an honoree member of the JSA. Ma Hunkel's daughter, Sisity and one of her son's friends became Red Tornado's sidekicks, the Cyclone Kids.

Eventually, Ma Hunkel was forced to reveal her identity as Red Tornado when the 'Yellow Mask Mob' were taking over the neighborhood. Thanks to Ma Hunkel's testimony, they were all jailed. But she paid a heavy price. Ma Hunkel and her family started to receive death threats from the remainder of the Yellow Mask Mob, and in order to protect her family, Ma Hunkel faked her death, and went into a witness protection program, with everyone, including her children, not knowing the truth. After 35 years, however, the last member of the Yellow Mask Mob died, and Ma Hunkel could finally come out of hiding. It's not sure what happened with her children, how they reacted to the news that she was alive after all, but Ma Hunkel has a close relationship with her granddaughter, Maxine Hunkel, the hero Cyclone, so it can be assumed that everything worked out.

Ma Hunkel has a mother hen relationship with all the members of the JSA, even the original members. She is well known for cooking treats for the members of the JSA when they are upset. Ma Hunkel is just as loved in return as she loves the members of the JSA.

Ma Hunkel first returned to the JSA to be their museum curator, but she also acts as a housekeeper too, keeping the JSA HQ cleaned to perfection. In the most recent incarnation of the JSA, Ma Hunkel is shown as being more of the curator, but you can be sure that she still bakes treats when the JSA is feeling down.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel joined the JSA to keep an eye on the then member, Black Adam. After Black Adam left, Captain Marvel elected to remain. However, when he and Stargirl went into the Shadowlands to search for the missing Green Lantern, Stargirl discovered his identity of Billy Batson, and discovering they were the same age, started dating.

As mentioned above, Jay Garrick was concerned about the perceived age difference, and Captain Marvel couldn't tell him about this Billy Batson identity, because his wisdom wouldn't let him. Captain Marvel left the JSA at the same time he broke up with Stargirl.

I have no idea of Captain Marvel's current status, but I think he's somehow become the wizard Shazam.

Black Canary
As I'm sure everyone knows who Black Canary is, and there are far better people than me who can explain her, I'll just do the very bare facts. Black Canary was a member of the JSA until Green Arrow came back from the dead. She left the JSA, but remained a part time member until its disbanding.

Before Green Arrow came back, she had a brief relationship with Dr. Mid-Nite, but broke it off when she left. Things were strained between Dinah and Dr. Mid-Nite since, but they seem to have come to peace with one another.

Atom Smasher

Atom Smasher, Al Rothstein, wanted nothing more than to become a member of the JSA. His grandfather was the villain Cyclotron, but his godfather was the original Atom, and it's his legacy Al is trying to live up to.

However, angry over his mother's 'death', Al joined Black Adam's rogue team, and invaded the country of Kahndaq. Al became disillusioned, however, and brokered an uneasy peace between the Kahndaq ruler and the JSA. At the trial to face his actions, Al pleaded, and was found, guilty. He then became a member of the Suicide Squad, and was involved with Black Adam's downfall.

It is not clear what Atom Smasher's current status is in the DC universe.

Dr. Fate

Dr. Fate is Hector Hall. He is the son of Hawkman and Hawkgirl. The original incarnation of Dr Fate was in 3500 BC, when Nabu, a Lord of Order, was exiled to Earth. He took the guise of an Egyptian sorcerer, and became an advisor to Prince Khufu, the first incarnation of Hawkman. His essence and power since became entombed in his Golden Helmet and Amulet. Hector Hall is its current possessor.

Hector has had an, to say the least, unusual life. Hector has been shown as having great doubts about being Dr. Fate, not helped by the fact that Nabu, able to 'speak' to Hector, continuously lied to him in order to manipulate things the way he wanted them to be. For instance, he lied about Hector's wife, Lyta, purposely separating them so Hector was not as resistant. He also separated Hector from the other voices in the helmet, the previous Dr. Fates. However, Hector discovered Nabu's lies and has banished him from the helmet. He relies on Kent Nelson - the 'first' Dr. Fate's - advice now.

Hector has reunited with his wife, but the Spectre banished them both to Hell, and their physical bodies died, their souls going into the dreamspace.

Hawkgirl

Hawkgirl, Kendra Saunders, is the reincarnation of Princess Chay-Ara. Kendra is Shiera Saunder's great niece. She became Hawkgirl when she tried to commit suicide, and Kendra Saunder's soul moved on, while the soul of Princess Chay-Ara took its place. Kendra was trained to be Hawkgirl after buy her grandfather, but had no memories of her past lives, until she was nearly killed, the near death experience triggering her past lives to come to the forefront.

Although she now has the memories, Kendra has no intention of being Hawkman's mate again. This caused tension between them, because Hawkman is unused to having to 'fight' for her attentions. These tensions were further strained when Hawkgirl and Sand kissed, Hawkman witnessing the event. However, they do seem to have to come to peace with one another.

Hawkgirl joined the JSA, and became close to Stargirl - for a time, they were the only girls on the team - and even after Power Girl joined the JSA, Hawkgirl was still closer to Stargirl. Hawkgirl left the JSA, and is now a member of the JLA.

Hourman I and II and III

The primary Hourman of this era is Hourman II, Rick Tyler, the son of the first Hourman, Rex Tyler. Rick struggled to become Hourman II, before accepting it. But not without sacrifices. Rick became addicted to the drug ' Miraclo', that gave him, and his father, their powers for an hour at a time, as well as almost dying from leukemia. He has since recovered from both, and is Hourman again. In addition to being able to become superpowered by the drug - now administered via homeopathy - he is able to have visions of the future, of what will happen in exactly an hour's time. Rick has also suffered from a troubled childhood. His father was never at home, always either fighting crime, or busy at his company, Tyler Pharmaceuticals, largely ignoring Rick and his mother.

Rex supposedly died during the JSA's battle with Extant, but was actually taken to the edge of time, with an hour's respite. When Rick was seriously wounded, he teleported himself to his father, and took his place at the edge of time, while Rex was transported back to the present, where he donned the Hourman costume once again. He, against the JSA'a advice, opted not to tell his wife of his return, claiming that he was dead to her, and he didn't want to hurt her anymore, but his shame in what Rick had done for him was playing a large part too. Eventually, after some time, Rex, along with Flash, Mr. Terrific, Dr. Mid-Nite and Hourman III, an android who has the DNA of the Tylers, travelled to the edge of time, and Dr. Mid-Nite was able to patch up Rick, using the hour's respite.

Rick then attempted to take his father's place again, this time in the battle against Extant, but Rex stopped him, and Hourman III took Rex's place, sacrificing his life so that Rex and Rick could live. Rex and Rick returned to the present, and settled things with Rick's mother. Rex has retired as Hourman, and is spending his time rebuilding Hourman III. Rick rejoined the JSA, and is currently a member of its newest incarnation, along with his wife, Liberty Belle.

Jakeem Thunder

Jakeem Thunder, or Jakeem Williams, is the guardian of the magic pen that houses the fifth dimensional being Thunderbolt. Jakeem gained this position when he asked Flash - Jay Garrick - for his autograph. Jay had been visiting Johnny Thunder, the first keeper of the pen, and accidentally took the magic pen with him, and then, not realizing what it was, gave it to Jakeem. Jakeem was first unsure of his new power, but eventually overcame his fears, and helped the then-disbanded JSA members and the JLA save the world. Jay, Alan and Ted take Jakeem under their wing, helping him learn how to wield his power properly.

Jakeem lives with his aunt in Keystone City, after his mother died and his father disappeared. Along with Stargirl, Jakeem is one of the youngest members of the JSA. He and Stargirl disliked one another at first, but after a solo battle against Solomon Grundy, they came to a truce, and now treat one another like brother and sister.

Jakeem remained in the JSA, but was not included in its newest incarnation. However, he has returned in their latest recruitment drive.

Power Girl

Power Girl, Karen Starr's, origins are, at best, confusing. For some time no one knew where she was from, or who she was, and neither did she. For a time she thought she was the daughter of an Atlantan sorcerer, but it was eventually discovered that she is from a parallel Earth, the cousin of Kal-L. She is the only survivor of that Earth.

She has essentially all of Superman's powers, and was the first new recruit the JSA took in after it reformed. Karen is shown as being very confident of herself, but it is perhaps only a show. She is continuously trying to prove herself by taking on risky missions, and, as the following scans show, is actually very lonely:

(I apologize for the terrible scans)

Recently, however, she seems to have gained confidence and since Hawkgirl is no longer a member of the JSA, she and Stargirl have become good friends. Karen has a notorious 'friendship' with Ted Grant, and the two seem to delight in annoying each other.

Karen is currently the chairperson of the latest incarnation of the JSA.

Sand

Sand, Sanderson Hawkins, was the ward of the first Sandman, and a member of the JSA. He was transformed though a bizarre experiment into a crazed silicon monster, then revived from a state of suspended animation and cured of his condition. Sand became a geomorph, able to transform his body into sand and silicon to a limited degree. He is also able to control earth, and at one point literally held the Earth together after the moon's orbit was shifted, causing the planet to try and tear itself apart. Sand has also inherited his mentor's dream visions.

For a time, Sand was the chairman of the JSA. When Hawkman returned, Sand offered to step down and let him be the chairman once more, but Hawkman refused the offer. However, when Hawkman later witnessed Sand and Hawkgirl kissing, things disintegrated and the rest of the JSA decided to vote for a new chairman. When Mr. Terrific was declared as the victor, Sand gladly handed over chairmanship to him. Things were strained between Hawkman, Hawkgirl and Sand for a while, and Sand admitted that he did have feelings for Kendra, but she didn't return them. Sand and Hawkman came to a truce, and their relationship was settled again.

Sand has now become Sandman, and is currently a member of the latest incarnation of the JSA.

Stargirl
Formerly the 'Star Spangled Kid'

Courtney Whitmore started on the path of a hero with less than heroic intentions. She was jealous and angry that her mother had married her step-father, Pat Dugan, and when she discovered the cosmic converter belt that Pat had, she became the Star Spangled Kid to make him angry. Her plan failed, however, since Pat just built the robot S.T.R.I.P.E to keep an eye on her. Courtney became one of the youngest members of the JSA, and has since become more serious in her heroics - she understands, now, what an awesome legacy she is part of.

Courtney is unique in the JSA, as she is carrying on two legacies, that of the Star Spangled Kid, and the Starman legacy. Starman, Jack Knight, at first didn't approve of Courtney, but later changed his mind and even gave Courtney the Star Rod. Courtney changed her name to Stargirl during the Legacy mission, although she is usually called 'Stars' or 'Star' by her team-mates.

Courtney is often described as being the JSA's conscience. She is closest to Power Girl, Hawkgirl and Jakeem Thunder, with whom she has a sister/brother relationship, after a rocky start. Courtney also embarked on an ill-fated relationship with Captain Marvel, when she discovered his Billy Batson identity. Their relationship was cut short when Jay Garrick expressed his concerns about the apparent age difference.

Courtney is a vital member of the JSA, and is currently a member of its latest incarnation.

Mr. Terrific

Michael Holt was a child genius. He has degrees in almost everything, is a Olympic gold medal winner of the decathlon, and created a multi-million dollar company from scratch. However, his life has been filled with tragedy. When he was growing up, he helped his mother care for his mentally handicapped brother, and was devastated when he died. Only a few years later, Michael's wife and unborn child were killed when a drunk driver crashed into their car, leaving Michael suicidal.

One night, as he was standing on the edge of a bridge, ready to throw himself himself into the river below, the Spectre came to him and convinced him not to give up, telling him about Terry Sloane, the first Mr. Terrific. Inspired by him, Michael dedicated himself to teaching 'fair play' to the street youths, and became the new Mr. Terrific. He joined the JSA, and soon found himself elected as their chairman. After some initial doubts, Michael soon settled into his role, staying the JSA's chairman until its disbanding.

Michael is often called 'the world's third smartest man', and is an invaluable asset to the JSA. Michael is always seen with his T-Spheres that transmit information directly into his mask, which also makes him invisible to all media. Michael is also shown as being a atheist, saying that he can't believe in religion because of his scientific mind. This leads to some wonderful interaction between him and Dr. Mid-Nite, himself a Christian, immediately after one of Dr. Mid-Nite's proteges has been murdered:

Later, after Michael has a near death experience and sees his wife and child, he had time to think about religion and has another wonderful scene with Dr. Mid-Nite:

Michael is currently a member of the latest incarnation of the JSA, but he has stepped down as chairman, since he is busy with Checkmate.

Dr. Mid-Nite
'Everyone has a talent, Pieter. Mine is learning. Yours... is a passion to heal.' - Mr. Terrific

Pieter Cross is a medical prodigy. He graduated from Harvard at the age of 19. Pieter had shown as a child a great capacity for learning, especially anything medically related. In fact, he was delivered by the first Dr. Mid-Nite, Charles McNider, when his mother was attacked by rapists. The shock of it sent her into labour, and luckily, Charles McNider was on hand to deliver both the baby and justice to the rapists.

Pieter left his native Norway and, after graduating, sought residency with McNider. However, Pieter got caught up in an insurance fraud scandal (it is implied that Pieter was the one uncovering it) and he lost his residency. Pieter then started to work outside the system, setting up the free 'Cross Clinic' in the troubled city of Portsmouth - now his home - and became something of a 'midnight doctor', helping the poor and underprivileged.

It was then that a new drug, A 39 was unleashed on the city. Pieter treated several people for overdose with it, and started to investigate it. This didn't go over well with the drug makers and they spiked Pieter's drink with the drug. Pieter was driving when the drug kicked in, crossed the meridian, and crashed headlong into another car a young woman was driving, killing her instantly and the flying glass blinding Pieter. Pieter then lost his license to practice for 'being over the limit', though he still kept his clinic running.

It was several weeks later when Pieter was out walking in the woods near his mansion when he heard an owl hooting, and, driven by the desire to see the owl, he removed the bandages covering his eyes and discovered that due to a side effect of the A 39 drug, he could see in the dark. Pieter then decided to become Dr. Mid-Nite, with the owl from from the woods becoming his pet, Charlie. Pieter brought the drug makers to justice and assisted the JSA on a case, and was invited to join them. He did, and began a tentative romance with Black Canary, which ended as soon as Green Arrow returned from the dead, even though Pieter had fallen in love with her. Things were strained between them for some time, before they semi-resolved their conflicts.

Pieter is recognized as being the world's prominent experts on meta-human medical issues, and is shown as a 'to-go' man, along with Mr. Terrific, when a hero needs advice on a medical or scientific matter. As a consequence, Dr. Mid-Nite has, at one point or another, examined nearly every hero that is active. Pieter interacts with many people, but mainly Mr. Terrific as mentioned above, with whom he plays a weekly Scrabble game with. Pieter is a quiet man, who prefers a good book to television, but is also a very capable fighter when the need calls for it. However, Pieter is a doctor first and a hero second and will often drop out of a fight to treat the wounded.

Pieter is currently a member of the JSA, continuing to be the doctor for the meta-human community.

Charlie

Charlie is the most important and amazing member of the JSA. He is Dr. Mid-Nite's pet owl. As seen below, Charlie is capable of a lot of things.

Staring at patents in concern and sharing worried glances with team members:

Reading medical files:

Simply put, Charlie is Awesome.

4. The Newest Incarnation of the JSA.

An introduction to the new members of the JSA, up to issue 11:

Liberty Belle

Jesse Chambers is the daughter of two golden age heroes, Johnny Quick and Liberty Belle. Jesse originally inherited her father's speed, becoming the hero Jesse Quick, and was a member of the Teen Titans. She gave up her powers, though, to save Wally West's life. She later discovered that she had also inherited her mother's powers, and became the second Liberty Belle after her mother lost her powers. Jesse was recently shown as still having her father's powers of speed, she was just blocking herself from them.

Jesse had a troubled personal life, trying to juggle being a hero with running her father's company. The death of her father hit her hard, and she had had a bad relationship with her mother. Jesse left the Teen Titans after it emerged she was having an affair with her mother's fiancé, which further estranged mother and daughter. For a time Jesse became the JSA's business manager and made tentative steps in repairing her broken relationship with her mother, while also become attracted to Rick Tyler, and was extremely worried over his disappearance while he was seriously wounded (see above for details).

When her mother lost her powers, Jesse was there, and their relationship has mended. Jesse and Rick married, and Jesse took on her mother's role as Liberty Belle, though, like her mother, there is uncertainly about just how she gets her powers.

Jesse is currently a member of the latest incarnation of the JSA, described as an 'All American Power House'.

Damage

Grant Emerson is the son of the first Atom. He had a difficult childhood, since he was abused by his foster father. He discovered that he had amazing explosive powers and was recruited into the Teen Titans, a member with Jesse Quick.

It was during this time that Grant accidentally blew up half of downtown Atlanta, and has been banned from entering it since. But Grant's troubles weren't over yet. During a fight with the Reverse Flash, Zoom, he was almost beaten to death, and his face was left horribly scarred. Grant only wears the mask of Damage because he has to, can't let anyone see his face, which causes some friction between him and Hourman, since Grant doesn't seem to want to be a hero, or a member of the JSA. However, during a fight, when Damage's mask is torn off and Grant explains that he has to wear the mask, the friction between himself and Hourman is reduced.

Grant is often impulsive, but under the JSA's tutelage, he is slowly learning to become less so. Grant is closest to Liberty Belle and Hourman, though initially resenting them for seemingly being the 'perfect' couple. Once Grant has learnt that they are not, they form a strong bond.

Cyclone

Cyclone, Maxine Hunkel, is the 19 year old granddaughter of the first Red Tornado, Ma Hunkel. Maxine is a theater major, and a social outcast from her peers, when Power Girl and Mr. Terrific invite her to join the JSA.

Maxine has a very bubbly personality - is a chatterbox - and has grown up idolizing the JSA. She is particularly a fan of fellow teen hero, Stargirl. Maxine once started a 'Junior Justice Society of America' club at school, and talked about Stargirl for 3 hours.

Maxine isn't all happiness, though. When she was six, she was kidnapped by the scientist T.O.Morrow, and infected with nanobytes which it is thought give her her powers. She also suffers from depression as a result of her outcast status.

Maxine is very new to being a hero, and wears her heart on her sleeve, but has quickly become part of the JSA's family.

Wildcat II

Wildcat II, Tom Bronson, is a reluctant hero. He is the result of a one night stand between his mother and Wildcat, Ted never knew about him until the JSA were tracing the bloodlines of their members. With Batman and Robin's help, the JSA confirmed that Tom was Ted's son. Tom knew that his father was Wildcat, and doesn't resent him for not being there when he was growing up and doesn't expect Ted to be there for him at all, saying that he's been doing fine since his mother died from cancer a year before.

Things might have been very different had not Vandal Savage attacked Ted and Tom. Tom was then revealed to be metahuman, able to transmogrify into a werecat, becoming a literal Wildcat. Tom has had this ability all his life, and it seems to be triggered by adrenaline, which is why he had never been in a fight since 8th grade, which he lost. But, joining the JSA at his father's request, he is learning how to fight.

Tom also has enhanced senses when in his werecat form, able to smell where some stranded firefighters were trapped in a burning building, and his hearing also becomes enhanced.

Tom is one of the next generation of heroes, an no doubt he will be as great a fighter as his father is.

Obsidian

Obsidian, Todd Rice, is the son of Alan Scott. Along with his twin sister, Jade, Todd was raised by foster parents, but his foster father abused him, leading to the darkness in Todd's soul. This darkness was later found to be part of the 'Shadowlands' , where Obsidian gains his powers.

Todd and his sister shared a telepathic link with each other, which lead to them meeting when they were teenagers, They were heroes for a while, before moving to Hollywood. However, they quickly tired of that life, and soon returned to heroics. It was at this time that the darkness inside Todd started to grow, and he was manipulated into turning against his father and sister, turning to the villainous side. Obsidian and his allies were defeated by the JSA, but regrouped, and soon attacked them again, with nearly devastating results. Obsidian covered the world in darkness, and pulled his father into the Shadowlands, very nearly killing him. Alan was rescued by Stargirl and Captain Marvel, and, with the help of the Starheart, Alan was able to drive the darkness out of Todd.

Todd spent the next few months healing in a metahuman hospital, with daily visits from his family. Todd lost his connection with the Shadowlands, and started working in a volunteer centre. When his sister was killed, Todd regained his powers, perhaps the shock triggering them into activeness.

Todd has since become a member of the JSA's latest incarnation, and acts as the building's security guard. Though normally seen only as a shadow on a wall, Obsidian has recently been playing a larger role.

Todd is unusual, as he is one of the few superheroes to be canonically gay. Todd is in a committed relationship with Damon Matthews, a federal prosecutor who works alongside Manhunter in her civilian role.

Citizen Steel

Nathan Heywood is the grandson of the first Citizen Steel. Nathan was the State of Ohio University's star quarterback, before his knee was shattered in a accident. His leg later had to be amputated because of an undiagnosed infection in the wound. As a result Nathan became addicted to painkillers, and resentful toward everyone.

While attending a family picnic, the Heywoods were attacked by the 'Fourth Reich', a team of Nazi-like villains, attempting to wipe out the bloodlines of Golden Age heroes. Nathan saw nearly all of his family murdered, and, along with with one for two children, was the only survivor.

Nathan was taken to Dr. Mid-Nite by Hawkman, who had attempted to stop the massacre, because a metal alloy from the villain Reichsmark was attaching itself to Nathan's body, from when had Nathan attacked him. Dr. Mid-Nite soon discovered that the metal was completely taking over Nathan's body; his amputated leg has 'grown' back, and soon all his muscles and tendons were metal too. Dr. Mid-Nite and Mr. Terrific made a steel containment suit to act as skin for Nathan. Nathan was then christened Citizen Steel by Power Girl

But his new metal body has its drawbacks. Nathan can no longer feel any differences in temperature, nor can he feel anyone touching him. Nathan quickly joined the JSA and has become one of its most 'public' members, especially where children are concerned. He is shown as teaching a group of children how to fly kites, and in the adorable scan below, was the JSA member who was tasked with entertaining he children at a firehouse party.

Nathan has been though a very hard time, but seems to have come out of it, leaving behind his bitterness and resentment.

Starman

Starman is... well, crazy. He is from the 31st century, a member of the Legion of Superheroes, Thom Keller. He was sent back to the current century and became Starman, with gravity density powers, or, as he puts it, 'I make things heavy!'

Starman has been diagnosed as being schizophrenic. He had voluntarily admitted himself into the 'Sunshine Sanctuary', where he lived, only leaving to do superheroics. He is given membership in the JSA, and is sometimes seen as being annoying by his team-mates, because of his craziness, while breaking the 4th wall. His favorite day is Wednesday and he is very fond of the number 52.

Starman also once completed a complex mathematical theory that Mr. Terrific had been working on for a year and a half, leaving Michael amazed, even though Starman says he only got a B+ in science.

While certainly being one of the strangest members of the JSA, Starman is also one of the most lovable.

In the next few issues, the JSA is going to be expanding their ranks. It's uncertain who is going to become members, and if they are going to be full time members, but Jakeem Thunder is set to return. There are also going to be some totally new members; the new Judomaster and Mr. America just being two of them. What the future holds for the JSA is uncertain, what with the current state of canon, but one thing is for sure. Well, actually, I'll let Wildcat tell it to you:
