Gretchen wasn’t sure when it started, when her curiosity about Claire (how often did you meet an indestructible cheerleader?) turned into something else. She would come into their room when Claire was only wearing a bra, and her stomach would flutter in a funny way. She would find herself watching as Claire brushed her hair only to blush and look away when her new roommate caught her. Sometimes, when she couldn’t sleep she’d watch Claire, and the rise and fall of the other’s chest, the rhythm of her breathing would soothe her to sleep.
It wasn’t until Gretchen was talking to someone during lunch one day, going on about how Claire used to be a cheerleader that she realized something that hadn’t quite clicked in her head before. She didn’t just like Claire or think she was the coolest person she had ever met (much better than her old roommate who smelled like pickles).
No…she liked Claire. Like liked her. As in she wanted to take her out on dates, snuggle next to her watching late night television and feed each other ice cream before kissing and doing more. A lot more. She found herself feeling angry when she saw boys flirting with Claire, which happened all the time because Claire was smart, and pretty, and petite, and one would have to be crazy not to want her.
Everyone had always called Gretchen crazy, but she still wanted Claire anyways. And it kind of scared her.
She had known for a while now she wasn’t really interested in boys. She had dated a few boys back in high school, but it had never really gone anywhere with any of them. There were no sparks when they kissed her, no butterflies in her stomach, nothing. But at the same time, she had never really had a crush on a girl before either.
But she had one on Claire, and it was bad. She found herself Googling her roommate when she wasn’t around, finding old pictures of her from when she was a cheerleader. She read up on her as much as she could. A little obsessive, maybe, but she just wanted to know as much as she could about her. She had never wanted to know someone as much as she did Claire. It festered inside of her.
A few times, she thought of telling Claire, but she always chickened out. She had no reason to think her feelings were returned, or that Claire even liked girls. Gretchen didn’t want to lose the first real friend she’d had in years, and she knew Claire needed her just as much, if not more. So she kept it to herself.
Until the day when Claire confronted her about it. She found the collection of pictures, she heard from one of their other friends that Gretchen had been talking about her. She knew there was no turning back now. Either Claire would believe her pleas about not being a stalker, or she’d throw her out. It was the point of no return.
And so with nothing else to lose, she kissed Claire.
