Also, the story is set during the big changes of the 70s in Japan, and the contraddictions between traditional and modern are quite important in the book, but somehow I feel they are not that topical anymore. For example, the author writes a lot about the sexual life of the characters and about the eccentricity of one of his girfriends, but I believe that nowadays the reader is more bored than shocked reading them ;)
Yet, when I was at the end of the book I didn't want it to finish, and when I turned the last page I was completely captured by the story, and I knew I would miss the characters. This is the main sign that I liked a book :)
Finally, even if the story is definitely sad, one of the aims of the author is to show how the main character is able to become adult and deal with the pain, learning how to remember the beloved people who died but at the same time going on with his life
