The conflict goes back to the 10th century, when China claimed Buddhist Tibet as part of their empire. They allowed the Dalai Lama to exercise political as well as spiritual power over the Tibetans-pretty much didn’t maintain their authority for years and years until 1911, when Tibet rebelled and called for independence from China. China didn’t like that, and in 1950 sent in waves and waves of Communist troops into Tibet who looted thousands of holy monasteries, destroyed sacred relics and killed hundreds of monks and Tibetan civilians. The Dalai Lama and Tibetan civilians were forced to flee into India and China forcibly maintained political control of Tibet….fast forward to the 10th of March-anniversary of Chinese control- when Tibetans staged protests which resulted in riots with Chinese police who used force to stop them. The accurate numbers of the dead are not confirmed now, but are estimated at this week to be 99 dead and 253 injured (we’re talking Buddhist monks and civilians here).
