Signal 30: Risk, Desire, and the unintended consequences of rewatching BtVS alongside Mad Men

Still not a full-on, old-school episode write-up (but, uh, closer than I intended when I first set out to do this). The semester's not over yet, for one thing. But I can't resist the siren song of this show any longer, so I do what I can. It might end badly, but for now I'm following the call. I just can't help mixing in some Buffyverse as well. Great cross-analysis, and thanks for sharing it. It not only deepens my understanding of Buffy and Angel, it deepens my understanding of last night's fabulous Mad Men episode.

Thank you! I'm going on the assumption that the MM/BtVS fan base overlap is not exactly huge, so I'm excited that there are other people out there willing to read and discuss something like this.

Yes, I love that unlike everyone else--even the naturally talented, like Don or Peggy--Ken is an artist, driven by his desire to create, and that gives him the kind of detachment from work and inner satisfaction the others will never achieve.

Don keeps saying he wants to keep his work and his personal life separate, but instead they're becoming more and more intertwined.

Have I mentioned how much I'm loving this season? Heh.

Ahhhhhh, I've missed this, Plin. Have you got a cigarette?

(Believe it or not, I'm so old that Signal 30 was still being shown when I was in driver's ed. I was so curious to see how they were going to make use of that title; I hadn't expected to see it literally appear... as well as its figurative use.)

I feel as though I've seen Signal 30, too, but I'm not sure whether it was in Driver's Ed or some other context. I actually think it might have been a few years ago when I had to take a defensive driving class due to a speeding ticket... they were showing horrible scenes beforehand and during breaks.

Which is kind of disturbing, really, when you think about it.

(It feels good to be letting my fannish geek run free(ish) again! Thanks for still being here.)
