I'm a kid at heart, truly. My mom and step dad took my little brothers to see TMNT and I went with because hey, I wanted to see it anyway! Watched as a little kid myself.
The reasons for approval:
1. It has the wittiness and humor that I've always associated with the TMNT line. It begins with Michaelangelo working as a party 'clown', except he's a turtle, Donatello as an IT help guy (cracked me up!), and Raphael as a night vigilante.
2. They also focus on the problems the guys have always had and continually have to solve without making it the same old boring thing. (this is my opinion, others could say it really is the same old) But I liked it, maybe because it actually focused much more on Leo and Raph's constant clash. Of course, Raph eventually realizes his mistake and the group bands together again, but it's a very hard road.
3. Has April and Casey Jones in it, with April mysteriously doing ninja stuff. Didn't really expect that, and I didn't quite recognize her without her ugly ass 80s bananarama yellow jumpsuit. Read: improvement. But she's hot as ever.
4. Karai. Yes, Karai the new leader of the Foot is in this movie, and I like her characterization. The ending was her biggest role, I believe, because she sets up the next movie.
5. The fight scenes. Oh yes, they were all kinds of awesome. I really like the animation style, it's a real improvement. I do believe a live action movie wouldn't have worked as well, but the typical cartoony style would have been very kiddish.
6. WTF Splinter. Weird ass accent. I spent the whole movie hating his voice. I half expected the old codger to be dead by now but he wasn't. He's almost like a Yoda but not as cool. Was never much of a fan of him anyway.
7. Patrick Stewart voiced the main antagonist/protagonist (I can't really decide which, he changes mid way) Enough said. (also spent the whole movie trying to figure where the hell I'd heard his voice before, somewhere on X-men. Professor Charles Xavier, had to google it. Yep.)
8. This should be further up, but I have to say I love Raphael's characterization too. The movie focuses a lot on him because of his tiff with Leo, so we see a lot of him. I think they really kept true to his angry side and his rocky relationship with Leonardo. I wonder how they continue this in the next movie (there must be one) he doesn't seem like the type to just give up the "go my own way damnit" type.
9. I liked the storyline at the end where the brothers that stuck together won and the brothers who fought and betrayed lost. It kind of brought a good message without being all disney channel about it.
10. Foreshadowing. I give it a 6 out of 10. Most of the things happening I saw waaaaay far ahead, but I don't know what Karai is doing. That will be an interesting discover.
There. Now I'm wondering if I should go look in the Pit for some TMNT fics. I honestly don't want to drown in the proverbial sewer, however. :/ Anyone know of a good TMNT 'grown up' author site?
