"American cool is a paradox we seem destined to live out; it confronts us in childhood and we chase it through adolescence into adulthood and beyond. cool=freedom=democracy=individuality=capitalism...Cool has no definition. In fact, its total undefinability is what has made 'Am I cool?' the all-consuming question of our times." www.adbusters.org ( Read more... )

Wherever two or more are gathered in the name of cool, so shall it be there. The larger the crowd the cooler it is. Historical events are no longer marked by what they accomplish, or how they benefit humanity, but how many people paid attention.
How many know who won the Nobel Peace prize in 2002? (Jimmy Carter) (2001 Kofi Annan)

Who did Joe Millionare choose at the end of the show? Who won on the first season of Survivor? Which member of N'Sync is touring with Christina Aguilara? These questions are easy to answer, but so meaningless. Now I know this has nothing to do with consumerism, or advertising in america, but perhaps it will add a new angle to your thought process.

great example of the media's power over society....prostitots...those little 12 year old girls who think if they go around dressing like every teen idol they've ever seen and act like them and put those IDIOTIC glowing suckers in their mouth that they will somehow be cooler than the rest of the teeny-boppers who are just like them.
why do they think this makes them cool? because "everyone else" thinks it makes them cool...and "everyone else" thinks so because MTV told them so.

I once saw a commercial about "individualism"...everyone in this commercial was "unique" and dressed oddly...but the problem with it, was that I could stereotype every person on this commercial. There was the goth, the prep, the artist, the gay guy, cowboy.....they were all being called individual because they were like all the other people like them?
maybe if I could find that commercial you could use images from it...*shrugs*
