Okay, so I've been thinking, and I've been meaning to comment for some time now, so here are my somewhat nonsensical thoughts:
I think that fate has a lot to do with what people are in your life and when they enter and exit, and maybe the person who "got away" is destined to return to your life to complete their role. As for fighting to keep people there, I think you just know when to fight and when to let go. If the person is meant to be in your life at that time, you'll know that you have to fight for them. If they're not meant to be with you at that time, either they've served their purpose or fate will bring them back into your life. As for closure, I think, and hope, that even if you don't get tangible closure, it will come with time, distance, and growth. The same goes for escaping/letting go of the past, with time and growth and a change of perspective, I think, and hope once again, that one can overcome their past, taking with them what they've learned every step of the way.

I think that's the hardest part, changing. Breaking bad habits, cleaning out the badness of one's life. I think if one doesn't change in hopes of becoming a better person they are doomed to repeat their mistakes over and over again. But I also think there are situations that promote change and the whole letting go thing. I mean I'm going to use us for example...
I think the year apart allowed us to not be "Bennifer",
and I think the whole having a class together allowed us to let go of whatever pain there was.

On another note okay lets say you want someone in your life...are you fated to want them? hehe
sorry umm i'm just curious.
I blame Christopher Meloni, for everything.

I agree completely about cleaning out the badness, and certain things that are negative at the time they happen can turn out to be positive in the end. Also, I think that fate definitely makes you want certain people...in your life.. hehe.
Damn that Christopher Meloni... (;
