Clark held out one of his favorite snacks. It had taken him a long time hunting to find one and not squash it. Surely Lex would see how hard he’d worked and reward him!
But the bald boy turned a bit green instead.
“You don’t eat worms!”
That’s what mommy had said, but Clark still thought they were fun. And tasty.
“You dissect them!”
That was a scary thing. Mommy said dissecting was bad and Clark had to run away from anyone who wanted to ‘sect. Clark took back his offering and held it to his chest.
“No!”

This kid sure was strange.
“So you’ll eat a worm, but you won’t dissect it?”
“‘Secting is bad!”
“Why is it bad?”
“My mommy says so. Only bad people do it.”
Clark stood straighter and stared at him with anger.
“No ‘secting!”
“Does your mom know you eat the worms?”
The guilty frown on his shocked face was apparent enough.
“But I got it for you. They’re good!”
He seemed to think that this action was praiseworthy, if it was his way of making friends. Maybe it was a farmer thing.
“I don’t like worms.”
Clark’s face crumpled.
“But I like you.”
The smile burst onto his face and Lex felt happy for the first time since he and his mom moved here.
And Clark was kind of cute.
Even when he ate the wriggling mass in his next breath.
“How about I bring some gummy worms tomorrow instead?” Lex offered.
“Are they as good as these?”
“Even better.”
