“Hello, Mrs. Kent.” Lex used his most polite greeting.

Though his left arm was in the vise of Clark’s and he was unable to shake hands.

“Hello, Lex. I see you and Clark have become fast friends.” Martha snorted.

“Are you all right?”

“Just a little cough, really. Why don’t you boys go inside and have a snack?”

“No! We gotta study now!”

Lex lifted an eyebrow. In the short time he’d known the other boy, he had never turned down food. Even if it had fallen on the floor. And been stepped on. Or was still alive, come to think of it.

“Don’t you want me to get A’s?” Clark pleaded.

“Yes, but you can still get them after your tutor has some brain food.”

Why did Lex get the feeling Clark would pick him up and walk away with him if he was allowed?

“Okie dokie.” Clark pouted, but immediately cheered up when they had their cookies and milk.

The kitchen was so bright and warm Lex felt like he’d been dropped into Dorothy’s kitchen from the Wizard of Oz. Martha was in perpetual motion fussing over them and starting the dinner that appeared to be chicken. Fried chicken. Lex had heard of fried chicken from McDonald’s, but he had never eaten it. The day only served to get more adventurous.

Clark vacuumed them up his snack with great bites. Crumbs were all over his face. Mere minutes ago he had been begging to study. Lex didn’t understand it. What was the other boy planning? It better not be anything rude or Lex was taking his coat and cookies and leaving.

They really were the best cookies ever.

Martha tutted and used a napkin to clean off the rest of Clark’s face. Clark protested.

“I’m not a baby.”

“You still eat like one.”

“Not in front of Lex.” He whispered low but Lex heard him.

No way was this boy capable of deceit.

Martha went out of the room to watch one of her soaps, as she called them. Some twisted plot with enemies secretly being in love from what he could hear. It sounded quite repulsive to him.

Then Clark was touching the side of his face with a finger.

“What are you doing?” The closeness was making him nervous.

“You got a crumb, Lex.”

“I-I do not!” Clark put his finger back and showed him.

“Do too. Choco!” And Clark ate it.

Lex really couldn’t figure out why he was blushing.

“You’re a liar!” Lex said in anger.

The brunette’s face fell.

“You’re the human trash compactor!” That would teach him some manners.

Clark started to sniffle.

Uh, oh.

Those green eyes got all watery and were looking at him.

What should he do? His parents lectures never covered pretty hurt eyes that shouldn’t ever look that way.

“I’m sorry.”

And Clark pushed the biggest cookie on the plate towards him.

No way could Lex eat something that big.

“I don’t...”

Clark nudged it further onto his plate.

“You have it. I ate too many.” It was Clark’s way of getting Lex to forgive him, he finally figured out.

Lex was going to get a stomach ache.

“Thank you. It’s really five star hotel material.” He said as he chewed.

And Clark was smiling again.

Smiling at him.

Lex promised himself to try harder to be friendly.

Because Clark should always stay that way.
