Lex paced back and forth in his room.

Valentine’s day was tomorrow and he still didn’t know what to get Clark.

Sure, he had three back up presents of the usual sort; comics, chocolate, gold jewelry and chains.

Maybe he should just pile them on a float and have a parade to his new paramour.

Lex bet Alexander would have done the same for his Hephestian.

Lillian gracefully entered his room and studied him.

“You like this Clark?”

“Very much.”

“Have you decided on a gift?”

“Everything. Isn’t that inane?”

“No, my son.”

Lex paced the room to pick up a short gold chain. It glinted in the light.

He went and showed his mother his choice.

“Quite a gift for a new romance.”

“He can wear it everyday for everyone to see.”

“I’m sure he’d be just as happy with more gummy worms.”

“That’s not good enough! How else will everyone know-“

Lex stared down, shamefaced.

“Know what?”

“That he’s mine.”

Lillian sighed, and motioned Lex to sit by her, head in her lap.

He loved the stroking of her fingers over her scalp, just as loving as if he had hair. It had never mattered to her.

“Just remember, Lex, I loved your father very much. But he thought I was a possession to be used and put away as he willed. Yet people are not objects. They have free will.”

“I’m sorry.” He was just like his father that way, and his eyes burned from the knowledge.

“You need to be able to share to have any kind of relationship worthwhile.”

“So necklaces are out.”

“Not necessarily.”

“How can I fix it, mama?” Mother always knew.

Lillian grinned.

“LillianCorp profits for the quarter increased 10% over expected earnings. Let’s celebrate a little.”
