“Hey squirt. Lemme give you a good luck present.”
“No way, jerk face!”
Pete dodged a noogie from his brother Roy and ran to the bus.
“Don’t catch a disease, twerp. Dad will kill you!”
That was far too close for his liking.
His older brothers usually ignored him, but Roy was the resident bully in the family. And he liked to pick on the youngest of Rosses. He wished his folks would see through that innocent smile of Roy’s. If he’d seen the present Pete had gotten, he’d have smashed it.
He checked his backpack yet again. He breathed in relief that space monsters hadn’t taken it.
All the kids around him chatted and squealed about the big trade off time in class.
He could see the telling red bow Erica liked to wear near the front of the bus.
The t.v. said that girls like flowers. T.v.’s can’t be wrong. They know everything.
Finally, the bus reached the Kent’s stop and Clark came aboard. He was carrying the hugest covered sign that Pete had ever seen. He was in his best clothes too, with hardly any food stains on them. His face was washed and hair combed.
“Clark, you’re all clean.” His friend hated baths.
“I know.” Clark grumbled.
“Don’t you like it?”
“No. I’m only soapy for Lex.”
Pete had done the same thing for Erica.
He’d done the adult thing and dressed up in his Sunday clothes, and his mom had taken a picture. Roy had handed him something in a little packet. The packet was all shiny and flat and said the word cherry on it. Pete thought it was gum. Roy told him to give it to Erica.
Then his mom had seen it and taken it away. Roy was grounded and had wanted to give him that noogie.
All over some candy!
Pete figured his present would be fine.
“What’s under the blanket?”
“Lex’s card.” Clark whispered.
“Great googily moogily! Why’s it so big?” Pete was tempted to lift a fold.
“Just ‘cause.”
"What'ja get him?"
"I made heart cookies with mom. And I'm giving him my spaceship."
There was only one spaceship.
"But that's your favorite toy!"
The Mighty Flighty Rocket was the coolest toy Clark ever owned.
Pete had tried to trade him many a time for it.
Clark bit his lip.
"Lex gets the best."
They sat in excited silence for a few minutes.
“What did you get Erica?”
Pete checked for space monsters one more time before opening his backpack for what he’d made.
They were arts and crafts flowers. Roses he had made by hand started during his art class and then finished in secret at home. They were real looking and soft. He’d even put some of his mother’s flower perfume on them to make them smell nice.
“Oh, wow. Pete, you’re going to get so many kisses!”
The jolt hit and he realized what that meant.
He’d have to kiss. But was he ready?
The bus came to a halt out of Smallville Grade School.
“Good luck, Pete-antor!”
“You too.” And they bumped fists and got off the bus.
Pete couldn’t help but feel the Earth was doomed as they walked slowly to Home Room.
