“Great job, agents 008 and 009.” Lex whispered to Hope and Mercy as he reached the playground.
They had been watching his back for him in the hallway, glaring at anyone that tried to elbow or jostle him.
Lex had wanted the best bodyguards available. To his surprise these girls took judo, and knew more about fighting than any of the biggest boys. And they knew how to kick butt better, too.
Mercy grinned and put on her provided sunglasses.
“No problem, boss. I’ll walk the perimeter to keep them away.”
“And I’ll keep an eye on NGF.” Hope nodded with her shades sliding a bit down her nose.
Designer sunglasses for children had been hard to find. But all the best bodyguards had to have them, so he couldn’t let them go without.
NGF was the code for Nasty Green Fairy when they were in public. Meaning Lana.
Lex waited for Clark to come out after grabbing his own gifts, and he certainly did not have to wait long.
Clark came hurridly to him by the picnic table. He had his badly wrapped gift, a bundle of something that smelled delicious, and a large flat object which he’d covered over with a towel. It had been uncovered. It was very shiny and he could not tell what it was. He held it over his head so not to damage it.
He came closer and closer until he was almost before Lex, and he lowered the object and opened it.
"Lex! Happy-"
Then he tripped on a rock.
Shripp!
Clark’s head went right through his valentine card as it opened.
It was gigantic, and red, but also every color of glitter was sprinkled all over. And there was a picture of them one side kissing with fireworks.
He stood up and started to cry, with his head still stuck in, and underneath were his words.
Lex
Roses are red
vi’lets are blue
you don’t got hair
and I luve you
please be my ‘tine
‘cause your so smart
I don’t got dimes
so here’s my heart
Clark
Lex found himself grinning beyond belief.
“It’s wonderful.”
Clark wiped his eyes, snuffling.
“I broke it.”
“No you didn’t. You just added the best part.” Something in him felt warmer than ever.
“But I-”
Lex helped him take it off.
And finally he was the first one to give a true hug of his own.
The first hug he had given to anyone other than his mother, in fact.
Wrapped in Clark and the scent of what he now identified as sugar cookies, he was getting used to the fact that the embrace was not going to be something unknown anymore.
He kissed away the last tear on Clark’s cheek while using the card as a shield from prying eyes.
Clark brightened immediately.
“I have a special reservation. Let’s go.”
