I'm alive. I swear. Just laz-er, I mean, busy.

Pete dragged his feet to class when he heard the ringing bell.
He slipped through the crowd of students to sit behind a tussled up Clark.
“Clark, did you get into a fight?”
Clark shook his head.
“Lex is my boyfriend now! And no, just a glitter fight. ” He bounced in his seat as he talked.
“What’s that?”
Clark motioned Pete to lean in.
“Lex and me got to throw my glitter all over and the one that got the most gets kisses on demand for a whole week, no matter what.”
“Who won?” Not that Pete was really interested or anything.
“Lex.” Clark laughed as he saw the bald boy come in.
“Too bad.” Pete did not understand such a bet, but felt sorry for him. He nearly hid under his desk when he noticed Lana head bob friendly like at him.
“Wanna know a secret?”
“Sure.”
“I let him win.”
Sometimes Pete thought Clark must come from another universe. Planet of the Mush Heads!
“What about Erica kisses? Did you get them?”
“Not yet.”
Clark glanced his way in curiosity.
“Erica’s just shy. I’m giving her some space so she’ll see my rays of love and get used to them.”
Clark was even more confused if his face was anything to go by. But Pete could not just say that he had turned chicken in front of his best friend. No way was Clark going to beat him out in sneaking into the romance department.
“Oh.”
“She’ll get Supermarket Sweeped under my charms!” He saw Erica enter but quickly turned away when she smiled in his direction.
The class busily chattered around them, but parted when Lex moved closer with his body guards in tow. Those girls looked really serious and no one tried to make fun of Lex like before. They did not want to mess with those skirt suits.
He came to sit by Clark, and their hands met holding for a brief moment across the aisle.
“Hi.” Lex did another patented smirk.
“Hi.” Clark was going all sappy smile.
“You guys were together all though lunch. What’s with the hellos?”
“‘Cause then we can hi kiss!” Clark reached but Lex backed into his seat.
“I won the bet. We have to learn now.”
Clark did a world class pout but Lex refused to budge.
“But I thought we’d get to kiss more.”
“What do you call what we did during lunch?” Which Pete really did not want to think about.
“Not enough!”
Mrs. Sanderson came into the room, hushing the students up as she could.
“Are you shy, Lex?” Clark asked.
“No. I want you to pay attention. You need to know this stuff so people won’t take advantage when I’m not around.”
“Hey, I can help him.” Pete was no dummy. He was Clark’s friend too!
“Not like me.”
“Whatever you say, Richie Rich.” Big jerk face.
“Not even one?” Clark begged.
Pete was going to have to watch out for him, when he could be such a milksop.
“Eyes on grammar lesson now.”
“Okie dokie.”
But Pete saw the looks he occasionally gave Clark.
Like Lex wanted to kiss him and kiss him until he fell out of that desk.

Clark walked out hand in hand with Lex to the parking lot after school.
Lex had promised another Valentine’s gift.
And he certainly had delivered!
It was a beautiful power wheels truck for kids that was red and with a white racing stripe. It was shined and polished until it fairly glistened in the sun. It was very roomy for the looks of it, with leather seats done in white as well. And it even had a big shiny red ribbon tied around it like a big prize present.
“My mom said we should share it. And you can ride it whenever you come over.”
“It’s so awesome!”
“She said I could get an Aston Martin next.”
“Who’s that?”
“Another car.”
“Can we go on a ride?” Clark pleaded.
“Of course.”
But just as they were about to take off the ribbon with the help of Lex’s friendly chauffeur Enrique, a sleek green Mercedes pulled up to them.
A window rolled down. A very pretty woman motioned to Lex.
“Mom?”
“Hello Lex, dear. I’m sorry, but I need you to come with me.” She was polite, but the tone was more like something was wrong kind of tone.
“But I...” His voice was lost when he saw tears in her eyes.
“Please, no arguing.”
“Ms. Lex’s mom? Are you okay?”
“You must be Clark. I’m sorry we had to meet at such an inopportune occasion. Lex thinks the best of you.”
“I think Lex is best too.” He didn’t want to let go of Lex’s hand, but he had to.
“I’m sorry, but we must go.”
“Would gummies help? They always make me feel better.” Clark held out his last treasured handful.
“Thank you very much, but they won’t.”
“Clark Hug.” That was the other thing he knew made things better.
He held up his arms.
Lex’s mother conceded and got out briefly. “Alright.”
So he hugged her, and she smelled like lilies.
“Now hug Lex goodbye.”
“Bye Lex.” It hurt that he had to go. Clark was hurt that Lex was going, he did not like it at all.
“Bye Clark.”
Clark snuck a kiss on his cheek.
“I’m gonna rubble.”
“That’s rebel.” Lex smiled.
Clark watched sadly as the pretty car moved away, noticing another tear in Lillian’s eyes.
What had happened that even a Clark Hug could not fix?
