Plot alert. Don't shoot me, but I didn't want it to end yet!

Mercy held Hope back from the sad scene.
“We can’t do anything?” Hope wondered.
“Can’t. That’s the boss’s boss.” Mercy smiled though.
Hope wondered what Mercy was up to. The other girl could be downright devious when it came to carrying out missions. She was glad the blond girl had chosen to be her close friend and then girlfriend, out of all the other children.
Clark wandered away toward them.
“Cheer up, farmboy. Lex is fine.” Mercy called to him.
Clark bit his lip.
“Hope so.”
"Mercy knows."
"Lex is helping his mother."
Clark brightened.
"Lex Hug! I shoulda known!"
"Uh, sure." The blonde nodded.
"Lex Hug will fix everything!"
And Clark walked off holding his necklace like he could feel Lex that way.
When they were left alone, they got to trade their own gifts.
Mercy held out her gift, trying not to show she was nervous. But the darker skinned girl could tell by the twitch in her nose that she really was just as excited as she was.
“Milky Way is my favorite!” Hope hugged the candies and a small teddy bear to her chest.
“Don’t forget the best part!”
“Grenades!”
The plastic toy grenades were the most lifelike she could find, Hope bet. They were even camouflage, with brown and green. When she pressed a button on where the pin was, a high pitched explosion came out of the little ball.
“Awesome-O!” And she tried to squeeze Mercy but good.
“They were the closest I could get to the real thing.”
“You shouldn’t have.”
“I shouldn’t?” The blond girl asked.
“Just an ‘pression. I love it all!”
Hope got out her presents for her treasured.
The first was a stuffed creamy, fluffy white cat. Mercy was crazy about cats. Hope had watched her play with them and even had a notebook full of cartoon cat drawings. She tried to hide it, but doodled in it when she got bored of Mrs. Sanderson’s droning. She couldn’t have a real one because her parents were allergic.
Then she brought out the cat charm bracelet she’d found.
Mercy clutched it as well and put it on right away.
“How did you know?”
“I looked. You’ve got kitties on the brain, girl.”
Then they got to a little lip smacking of their own. Which, in Hope’s humble opinion, made it the very best Valentines day ever.
“Plus I’m gonna teach you how to make spitballs.” Hope said between kisses.
“You get the best presents for me!”

The note had been found while Lillian was in a board meeting for the company.
What you love the most will vanish
Panic raced through her.
She had bolted to the doors when hearing this, and had insisted the meeting come to an early close. There had been some grumbles, but Lillian was not the head of this conglomerate just for show, and they were not making any headway on the dissolution of some of the old rules.
Lex.
By moving to Smallville, she had hoped her son could have a normal life.
Lionel had so many enemies. It could be anyone with a grudge or just needing a scape goat for having a bad day.
Having to deal with this yet again after all their turmoil was almost more than she could bear. Thankfully, she had Pamela to help her. Things would get better in spite of this latest setback. It just had to.
“Mom?” Lex asked carefully.
“Yes, dear.” She held him, hugged him to her like that would be enough.
“Is everything alright?”
“It will be.”
She kissed his forehead.
“What a handsome young man you have.”
Lex sighed.
“He probably got cake all over his face again.”
But Lillian could see the yearning written on his face.
“I see he brought you gifts too.”
Lex spent the next few minutes telling her about his date. Lillian had to laugh at the other little boy’s antics and smile at the hole in the giant card.
“I was wondering why you got glitter all over the seat.”
“He even brought more of those cookies for us to share.”
“They are delicious. I must ask for the recipe.”
“And he’s my boyfriend.”
The excitement in Lex speak was also undeniable.
“I thought you didn’t like messy boys.” She teased.
“But then I get to groom him.”
Lex sighed again.
“And we get to play dress up. I’ve got to get out all my reserve closet stores.”
“You be a gentleman, now.”
“Always, mom.” Lex fingered his heart chain and put it next to his cheek.
Lillian figured she ought to give Martha a call. And in the near future.
She thought about it, joking to herself about the fixation.
After all, I'm going to have to meet my in laws sooner or later.
