Jumping rope was Erica’s game.

Two other girls held the rope and twirled while she jumped. They started singing in high, clear voices.

“Fudge, fudge, call the judge. Erica’s gonna have a baaaby, rap it up in toilet paper, send it down the escalator, what is it gonna be...”

She could do it for a long time. Up down and up down in a rhythm beat.

“Boy? Girl? Twins? Triplets?”

They started to speed up, and she had to space the jumps just right or her legs would get tangled. She hadn’t fallen though in a long time. But she could get tired out.

“Boy? Girl? Twins? Triplets?”

Even faster now.

She spied Pete across the playground and wondered why the boy never talked to her. Usually he had no problem being friendly of funny with other students, but when it came to her, it was like a big blank spot. He never looked in her direction when she looked at him. And she was too shy to ever strike up a conversation. She heard from the other girls that Lana had been seen talking to him.

They must be engaged by now. Everyone wants to be her boyfriend, except Lex and Clark.

The rope caught between her legs.

“Triplets! Erica’s gonna have triplets!”

She went to rest by the sidelines while another girl took up skipping and the refrain was sung again.

“Excuse me, Erica.” A blonde girl with a note pad in one hand and a pen in the other approached her.

“Yeah, that’s me.” She said shyly.

“I’m Chloe. I’m working on our newspaper, The Spark, and I wanted to ask you a few questions.”

“Okay.” But she doubted that she knew anything that could be news. Other than some gossip on who was going out with who.

“You know Lex, right?”

“Yeah. He’s the bald cool kid. My momma works at his momma’s doo doo factory.”

“So what do you know about him?” The girl scribbled while talking.

“Uh...he’s super rich and super smart, and tells everyone what to do.”

“Is that all?”

“Oh, and Clark is his favorite. Don’t pick on Clark or he’ll disappear you. Or worse.”

The rumors were really scary.

She scribbled down more, but didn’t look too pleased.

“Have you noticed anything strange about him?”

Erica thought.

“Him and Clark are the only boys that don’t want to marry or kiss Lana’s feet and do what she wants.” She stared at the ground as she spoke.

“Yeah, most boys are dumb like that. Don’t worry, they’ll grow up and find out she’s just a glob of pink snot one day.” Chole said kindly.

“Thanks.” She sighed.

It’ll be a long time before he wakes up and smells the skunk, though.

Clark noticed something strange was going on. Every day this week when he was with Lex, there were always a bunch of guys following them from a distance. They were also supposedly the toughest guys in school. They’d wear dark clothes and use Styrofoam cups with the bottom punched out to talk to one another. They also carried sticks, stones, and a lot of muscle. At first he was worried they were out for him and Lex to beat them up, but Lex said they were working on the payroll for him now.

But Clark was still nervous.

Hope and Mercy were the only ones that got to be close to them though. Clark felt better when he could see them nearby scouting, or keeping the big boys in line. They had inspections and would make boys who were a head higher than them drop and give them twenty or more push-ups for improper conduct or not having shiny buttons.

Another thing he noticed was how he no longer had to wait to go on line anywhere. Whether it was in the cafeteria to get milk and lunch, or the swings on the playground, or even to go to the bathroom, he no longer had to stand or dance not so patiently for the potty pass. Other students would retreat or part like water as he walked.

Sometimes, usually when he was playing with Pete, Lex would have meetings under the big slide. Nobody was allowed near the secret space when it was taking place. It was real dark under there, so Clark didn’t understand why he would like it. He also wondered what Lex talked about in those chambers, but had never asked his boyfriend.

It was probably more boring business stuff.

After playing patrolmen with Pete and zapping a gigantic imaginary spacebug, he went to see how said boy who loved purple was doing.

Lex was engrossed reading a really thick book from what he could tell from far away. He sat on a picnic blanket. To his side was a chilled bottle of grape juice.

“Freeze.” A large boy blocked his way.

“It’s Clark. I want Lex.” Clark protested.

“Boss said he didn’t want to be disturbed.” An ugly smirk came upon the boy’s face.

With that, he started to loom over Clark in a menacing way, trying to make him back up. Clark stumbled somewhat back, not wanting to be hit or shoved.

He wouldn’t be hurt, but he wasn’t supposed to show that he couldn’t be. Which he thought was dumb but his parents said so.

Seconds edged on until the smirking boy got bopped over the head by a fuming Mercy.

“Didn’t you get the memo, barf for brains? He’s even above a LVIP. Clark is LMIP!” She growled.

“Huh?”

“Lex’s Most Important Person!”

Clark felt his heart grow warmer.

The boy scrambled back apologetically.

“Sorry! Sorry!”

“Now drop and give me a hundred! Honestly!”

Mercy led Clark along with no further delay.

“Great for muscle, but ask them to add one plus one...”

“Two! And thanks, Mercy.”

“No problem. You have to drag Lex away from that brainy book. He keeps saying quotes in a funny language. Some famous guy named Playdo? Plato? And the very first Lex there ever was, who he keeps saying had the very first Clark that ever was.”

“Gotcha.”

He decided upon his arsenal and believed that a surprise tackle was on the menu.

“Super Clark Hug, Activate!”

And so he ran up and jumped on the unsuspecting Lex with one of his best hugs.

“Clark! Omph!” Lex was laid flat on his back by the attack, though he was not in the least upset.

“Got you!” He giggled and snuggled into Lex.

Lex let go of his book on the side of the blanket to move his hands gently over Clark’s face and hair.

“My fidelis.”

“Fido? I’m a doggie?” Clark tilted his head unknowingly much like a puppy and Lex laughed.

He certainly liked petting Clark enough to fit the charge.

Lex merely shook his head.

“Did you have fun with Pete?”

Clark thought that was a silly question, seeing as how Hope would follow them and always report back to Lex.

“Yeah. We patrolled and caught a big bug monster. It was all gooey and had a thousand eyes and a thousand poisonous legs and was going to eat everyone at school. But me and Pete blasted it into outer space!”

“The day was saved?”

“Yep.” He gave a smile and thumbs up before playing with Lex’s half of the heart necklace, watching it glimmer in the sun.

Lex rose on his side and kissed him on the forehead.

“So then, hero. What would you like to do today?” He ruffled the boy’s dark hair just so he could smooth it back down again.

“Be with Lex!”

Lex smiled.

“Besides that?”

“Hmm...the slide! Let’s go there first!” He tugged on his boyfriend’s hand.

It’s always more fun when Lex is with me!
