My first piece of advice is research. Research, research, research! Really, you can avoid so much heartache if you do just a little research ahead of time.
Also, make sure you plant things that have similar necessities. For example, don't plant a cactus next to an orchid.

Yay! You're so lucky to have some raised beds to grow veggies in! =D
