Let's talk jitemid...

This is more for my knowledge than anything, but can someone either explain in plain English (with examples, please!) or point me to a post explaining how jitemid works?

(FWIW, this might be of interest to Webby people, and I posted here because I don't want to confuse the newbies in helpscreening with this.)
