Somebody left a copy of the recent issue of SPIN magazine laying around here at work so we passed it around. as much as i'd like to keep abreast with new music there are a few things that disturb me.. like when I see head lines like "THE NEXT U2?"... nobody can be U2!!!

It's difficult for me to embrace some of these new acts as well. I have nothing against them and some are better than others. My hope is that some kid who gets off on one of these new bands does what I did when I was digging the "new" acts of my day and discover the influences. It was being into bands like Blondie, The Jam, Talking Heads, Television, The Fall, Gang Of Four...etc...that lead me to to The Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators, Roxy Music, Stooges, NY Dolls, etc and in turn goups the preceeded them. Nothing is ever original. The Beatles were doing Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers for the most part and The Stones were doing Chuck Berry/Howling Wolf/Muddy Waters. What will be the mark of these bands is how the use this as a starting point to refine that sound or advance it ( ... )

Actually, it is even worse if you're not into hipster rock n' roll. The whole "college-rock-singer-songwriter" genre is all people trying to imitate, ugh, Dave Matthews. And even worse, almost every male singer in mainstream country music has to have at least one Jimmy Buffet-esque "let's relax on the beach" song....that's painful.
