Character Notes:
Prelude: This is just to explain how I will be interpreting Kino Makoto for DDD. Since the anime and manga continuums are a little bit different I want to clarify just for the rest of the SM cast what it is I want to do with her. What I plan on doing is taking Makoto from the Anime while using the Manga to fill the gaps in her history, personality, abilities and correct some of the mistakes made in the anime. The anime actually messes up in a few places particularly where the timeline is concerned. The anime and the manga both start with Makoto and the others in grade 8 and after approximately 2 summers and 2 winters they start grade 9. A little strange huh? The wish that Usagi made on the Ginzuishou in season one could be the reason for this, but it's open for much interpretation. So I plan on following the manga timeline where Makoto is in grade 8-9 for Sailor Moon, R and Super then she starts grade 10 in SuperS and Stars.
History:
Silver Millennium Past Life Not much is known about Princess Jupiter/Sailor Jupiter’s past life which is the same both in the anime and in the manga. From the manga we can glean that from the time of Princess Jupiter’s birth, Queen Serenity made a castle for her much like she did for the other Senshi. Her castle was named after one of Jupiter’s moons, Io and according to the manga the Sailor Senshi are able to draw power from their respective castles. Princess Jupiter was one of the four guardians of Princess Serenity during the era of the Silver Millennium. The Silver Millennium was an age of peace and during this time the entire solar system was habitable. Then strange activity from the sun caused meteors to fall to Earth, these meteors carried an evil and shapeless entity known as Metallia. Metallia then met Beryl and was able to manipulate Beryl’s dark jealousy over the relationship between Prince Endymion of Earth (the man she coveted) and Princess Serenity of the Moon, into something twisted. With Beryl as her catalyst she was able to manipulate the rest of the humans on Earth with their envy of the children of the Moon Kingdom’s unnaturally long lives and turn them against the Moon Kingdom. Metallia said the Ginzuishou/Silver Crystal could also extend their lives and so the war between the Earth and the Moon began. It is during this battle that Princess Serenity, Prince Endymion and all four Guardian Senshi lost their lives. With grief in her heart Queen Serenity used her remaining strength to seal Metallia deep within the Earth at a place called Point D, in the Arctic. She also sent Princess Serenity, the four Senshi, and Prince Endymion to the Earth’s distant future where they were reborn.
Present Life On Earth Not much is known about Makoto’s present day life before her awakening as a Sailor Senshi either. Apparently her parents died in a plane crash when she was younger, leaving her with a dislike and a fear of planes. She has since lived alone in an apartment, taking care of herself, which is possibly how she picked up her skills for cleaning and cooking. It is unknown how she provides for herself, whether she lives off of some inheritance or if she has some other benefactor supporting her. She mentions in the manga that her apartment costs her 500 dollars which is roughly 42,265 yen. Before awakening as a Sailor Senshi, Makoto had a reputation as something of a delinquent which was partially her own doing and partially due to bias. She did get into fights that forced her to change schools and when she transferred to Usagi’s school, Juuban Junior High School, she was immediately called out by her teachers due to her wavy hair and her disregard for the school’s dress code both for which she had reasons for. The waves in her hair are natural and the standard Juuban Junior High School uniforms didn’t fit her due to her height, so she wore her old school uniforms. There were other reasons she transferred schools as well, a boy from her old school broke her heart by choosing Makoto’s friend over her, which was difficult for her, but she claimed that the main reason she changed schools was because she felt something inside, something more important than a lost love had called her to Juuban Junior High. She also mentioned that she had a hard time with friends and the one friend she did have she left without saying goodbye to when she transferred schools, something that she regretted doing. It‘s possible this could be the same friend that hurt her by dating the boy she liked and bitterness prevented her from saying goodbye.
Personality: Of all the Sailor Scouts Makoto is the most masculine and the most feminine of the lot. She’s athletic and her favorite athletic activity is martial arts, a very physical contact sport. In conjunction with being athletic she can be very competitive, even when it comes to things she’s not particularly good at-like school. In Makoto’s exam battle her final resolve was that she kicked the enemy’s butt and she would do the same on her exams. Her competitive nature also manifested itself in a martial arts match against Haruka, who she thought was a boy at the time. Immediately she thought Haruka would be a cream puff, but she was very angry when she lost, most especially since Haruka made her feel like she lost because she was a girl. While competitive she is, conversely, a team player. She works very well with the rest of the Senshi and even when she and Usagi were competing for the affections of Motoki-a boy they both liked-in the anime she was very sporting and even went as far as to wish Usagi luck. In the anime Mokoto is portrayed as being very boy crazy, comparing every guy she falls in love with to the “sempai who broke her heart.” This is not as prevalent in the manga, though she does mention this sempai at least once and she does tend to swoon over attractive guys with her fellow Senshi, but it tends to be more casual. Generally Makoto is very calm, patient and empathetic except for when she’s angry, she tends to strike first and then ask questions. She can be easily angered when her friends are in danger or when she feels someone or something is threatening her. She dislikes cheaters and people who are rude and she’ll be up front when it comes to other people and their offensive behaviors, she’s not afraid to tell someone they are out of line when she really believes it.
Apart from her more masculine traits Makoto has some feminine ones as well, while she may be athletic and good at sports she’s also a very talented cook, she likes plants and she dreams of having her own family-most likely due to the fact that her own parents died when she was young. She really enjoys it when her friends come over to her apartment since it gets lonely there, she likes to make them dinner and sit around the table, because it reminds her of a real family. She’s also quite the optimist as well; she tends to cheer people on even if their ambitions clash with her own. As mentioned above she wished Usagi good luck with Motoki and she told her that no matter what happens they shouldn’t hold a grudge. She also gives Motoki’s girlfriend a pep-talk when her heart becomes conflicted between her dreams to study abroad or her love for Motoki. Originally it was Makoto’s intention to urge Motoki’s girlfriend to leave so she would have a shot at him, but she ended up cheering her on instead. There’s also a very motherly aspect to her personality, mostly due to her tragic life experiences and her losses in love. She is able to be empathetic and has been shown counseling Chibiusa, Rei and Ami in the areas of love. Unlike Minako and Usagi, who tend to get involved and more hands on, Makoto simply listens and offers encouragement. Makoto is also very independent and confident, having stated that she could do anything and being on her own most of her life and doing things for herself she tends to become flustered by people who can’t do anything on their own, including Usagi who she referred to as a “useless thing” due to her inability to peel carrots, slice onions or even wash rice. Makoto likes to dream big as well, claiming that her biggest dreams are to get married, own a flower shop and a restaurant/bakery, but her greatest goal is to become the strongest warrior that she can be in order to protect her loved ones. In the manga Makoto is also more perceptive than in the anime.
As for quirks she shares a similar one with Minako in the anime in that she isn't all that great with getting proverbs to come out properly and she's even worse when it comes to using them in context.
Other: The number of Makoto/Jupiter’s transformations and attacks vary between the manga and the anime. Officially she has four different transformations: “Jupiter Power Make Up!” “Jupiter Star Power Make Up!” “Jupiter Planet Power Make Up!” and “Jupiter Crystal Power Make Up!” She also has a wider range of attacks in the manga, several of these attacks she shares with her anime counterpart: “Flower Hurricane” “Supreme Thunder” “Sparkling Wide Pressure” “Coconut Cyclone” “Oak Evolution.” She is also reincarnated by Galactica into an evil Senshi, granting her two abilities specific to her and her fellow warriors when they are in this form: “Galactica Gale” and “Galactica Planet Attack.” In the anime she only has three transformations and four attacks. Some of the equipment she uses differs a little between the genres as well.
