Canon: Sailor Moon
Character: Aino Minako / Sailor Venus
Timeline: The end of Sailor Moon R, at the final epic showdown with Wiseman.
Personality: Minako is a person who has two entirely different sides to her and can, at times, switch between the two as if it's nothing. The first side and the side that people see or notice more easily is the spazz inside her. Whenever Minako is somewhere it's pretty noticable for everyone: she talks, rambles, performs melodrama all on her own, fangirls over cute boys and true love and sometimes even overrules every other opinion with her own. Especially the boys are a big part of this, there's barely a time where she isn't talking about, thinking of or fangirling over boys. Minako's a very romantic person - the self-proclaimed 'goddess of love' - and always in search of her first love, even though she has already liked dozens of boys before that 'first love'. A few times it may seem like she has no moral sense (At one point in the series she goes on a date with two different boys at the same time and ends up running through town to be able to date them at the same time. Whenever someone tries to tell her that two-timing isn't exactly a good thing she practically refuses to listen.) but her heart really is in the right place. It's just that she seems to lose her mind easily once she gets fired up. Once she has a goal in mind it'll take a great deal to stop her.
But she isn't just a boy-crazy spazz. Even though it's hard to tell at times Minako has matured a great deal on her own, because she spent quite a while fighting on her own all across the world in England and even experienced deeply falling in love and accepting that that love isn't always meant to be. When she first enters the series it's still easy to see that maturity, but it fades more to the background when the series progresses and she only whips it out at more serious situations. Minako is the leader of the four and she knows this and takes it very seriously. She refuses to leave people of the group behind when there's still a chance to save everyone (as demonstrated when she walked back to save Sailor Pluto at the beginning of Stars) but also knows to be realistic when that's not possible (as demonstrated by the ending of the first season, when one by one the senshi sacrifice themselves for Sailor Moon). She's kind and deeply loyal to the people she cares about.
But as confident as she seems while in her spazz mode, Minako actually has a great deal of insecurities. In fact, most of the time when there's an episode centered about her it's about her being insecure about something-- her power, her leadership ability, her duty as a senshi conflicting with her dreams. She just doesn't show it openly most of the time and when she does she only shares it with the people closest to her - preferably Artemis.
Minako tends to get low grades at school, not exactly because she's very dumb but most likely because she just thinks she has better things (boy chasing, karaoke, etc.) to do than studying. She and Usagi often end up being make-up test or detention partners. She also has a habit of screwing up proverbs constantly. She does love P.E. though; Minako is very athletic (an aftereffect of her solo career as Sailor V) and especially loves volleyball.
Background: (Note: This is still a short version because listing Sailor Moon history is long. So the parts that aren't particularly Minako-specific are listed in a short way.)
Minako's family isn't discussed much in the series, but in various profiles of her it's stated that she has trouble with her mom, so most likely Minako has a pretty rusty relationship with her family (although the detailed cause is never discussed). In fact, her family isn't even mentioned most of the time - if at all.
Minako used to be a regular (although over-the-top boy-crazy and spazzy) school girl, until one day she met a white cat with a crescent moon bald spot on its forehead. He was the one who told her that she was actually a sailor senshi; Sailor Venus. But because she was the first one to be awakened, she fought under a different guise at first - Sailor V. Sailor V gained great popularity and eventually even ended up getting her own videogame, which ironically Usagi loved to play.
Minako and Artemis moved to England - which is probably further proof of how Minako doesn't have a very strong relationship with her family, because she went there all alone for an extended amount of time - to continue her work as Sailor V there, a 'training period' of sorts. Sailor V ended up working closely together with the police, to be specific with an Interpol officer, Katrina. Minako looked up to her as a big sister. She even fell in love in England with a young man named Alan. But one particular night when Katrina and Minako (as Sailor V) were chasing a criminal into a warehouse, the criminal set off a bomb and Katrina assumed that Sailor V had been caught in the explosion. She had, however, barely escaped the scene with her life. But the moment she saw Alan comforting Katrina over Minako's 'death' she realised that the two of them had become a couple without her even knowing about it. This was what made her leave England and go back to Japan.
That was when she joined up with the other four senshi who had just been awakened. They were stuck in a pinch due to Zoisite and Kunzite, but Minako - as her true form, Sailor Venus, this time - turned up and attacked those two, saving the others. At first they thought that Sailor Venus was the Moon Princess (since she was the last to show up) but Minako told them she wasn't.
From that moment on she started fighting together with the others against the Dark Kingdom and their monsters. They all discovered that Usagi, Sailor Moon, was the true Moon Princess and that the mysterious man who kept saving the senshi, Tuxedo Kamen, was her lover Prince Endymion. And even later on they ended up in the ruins of the Moon Kingdom due to Kunzite's attack and they discovered the truth about their past lives, in which Princess Serenity had been the princess of the Moon who had fallen in love with the prince of the Earth. But due to a woman's, Beryl's, jealousy and the power of a mighty demon, Metallia, the Moon Kingdom was destroyed and all the people there killed. That was why they had been reborn in the future, as their present selves.
After finding out this, the senshi headed to the North Pole for a final confrontation with Queen Beryl and Metallia. But their opponents, the DD Girls, proved to be stronger than they thought and one by one the senshi had to sacrifice themselves to defeat them. First Jupiter was killed, then Mercury. After that Sailor Moon weeped for Mercury's death, but didn't notice the ground below her glowing up. Sailor Venus quickly pushed her out of harm's way, but was caught in the DD Girls' trap because of that and ended up killing herself and one of them with a final Crescent Beam attack.
But in the end Sailor Moon was able to defeat the Dark Kingdom and with the last of her power she revived all of them, losing all their memories of their senshi selves in the process. They had all become regular girls again. But this peace didn't last long, because not too long afterwards Ail and An arrived with their tree and started attacking people again using their Cardians. Therefore it was necessary for Luna and Artemis to make the girls remember everything once again. They fought the Cardians, Minako even got a new attack (Crescent Beam Shower) as she tried to protect a bunch of school kids in a bus from one of the monsters. In the end all of them together were able to make Ail and An realise the errors of their actions and those two left Earth again with their tree.
But this still wasn't enough to warrant peace. A child arrived from the sky, Chibiusa, who was eventually revealed to be from the future, the 30th century. The enemies who had followed her to the present time now started attacking Tokyo and once again the senshi had to face monsters, the Droids. (This is also where Sailor Venus got yet another attack, Venus Love-Me Chain.) They even travelled to the future where they met Chibiusa's parents, Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion, the future forms of Usagi/Sailor Moon and Mamoru/Tuxedo Kamen. The future forms of the other senshi were also there, protecting Crystal Tokyo. But it wasn't until they went back to the present time that they faced off with the true mastermind behind these enemies, the Black Moon, Wiseman. It was in the middle of that battle that Minako got pulled into Adstringendum.
Abilities/Additional Notes: Even outside her sailor form, Minako is pretty athletic. She isn't too strong physically, but she's very agile and is often seen doing jumps and other athletic moves even as Minako, most likely due to her work as Sailor V. She also greatly enjoys volleyball and isn't too bad at it and has singing talent.
But the most important part of her abilities is that Minako is able to transform into Sailor Venus, the soldier of love and beauty. It's difficult to say what her powers are based on, since they aren't as clear cut as the other senshi's. Most likely her powers are a mix of different things. The most obvious one is love, her attacks prominently feature hearts, and one could say metal is also part of her powers (for example, her attack 'Venus Love-Me Chain'). But they're most likely mostly based upon light. Her first attack, Crescent Beam, for example is just that, a beam of light she fires as an attack. Her second attack, Crescent Beam Shower, is close to that attack but in the end it splits up into multiple beams. And her attack 'Venus Love-Me Chain' consists of a chain made up out of hearts/light/metal shot at the enemy and functions just like a real chain would. At times she also just resorts to physical attacks, especially kicking.
