I was drinking wine in Carolyn's apartment and talking about proposition 8 when cheering erupted from the apartment next door and at least ten champagne corks popped in quick succession. My phone started to ring and I grabbed it, flipped it open, didn't even have a chance to say hello before Miranda started to shout: "McCain conceded! McCain ( Read more... )

Thank you for this! It wasn't quite as much fun in the hometown of Joe McCarthy, but I enjoy the virtual party too.

It's not that I'm not happy Obama won- I am. His charisma- and charisma in general- annoys me because I think it is fake. And while I understand that you need it to win an election like this, I do not like it. I can and do appreciate what his being elected as president means for this country, however, I think it is both foolish and dangerous to elevate him to the level that I see people do.

PS I'm glad you had fun:)

Why do you think charisma is fake? I think of it as an attribute that some people have--like tone of voice or aptitude in math--and those who have it can use it or not and use it for good or not. So I don't see the fake there. Do explain.

I am curious if charisma has been used against forever amazing at some time- ie getting snookered by some charmer in the past? It makes my friend Sharon distrust all charismatic leaders, even if she agrees with their policies.

Well I have of course been snookered but I don't think it is particularly relevant in this case.

I suppose we could call it an attribute . It is, however, an attribute that I associate very strongly with manipulation and abuse and I am skeptical of people who have such a strong mastery of it. It is also an attribute that I lends itself to something less than forthrightness and to me that is totally obnoxious... Especially when we are talking about things that affect my life.
